Yes, women are completely capable of lying about rape. Any human being is capable of lying about anything.

What I want to point out is that lying about rape in order to simply have a legal abortion is different than the reasons listed in the past paragraph.

Okay, hear me out guys. And keep in mind I believe lying about rape is never right.

The only reason a woman, in a case like this, would be lying is because she can't have a legal abortion without doing so. Had she be allowed to have a legal abortion she would have no reason to cry and rape and probably wouldn't. Lying is a last resort.

Solution? Keep funding for abortions. Don't make abortion illegal.

Of course you'll still have the women lying for the various reasons listed but you'd eliminate the ones lying simply to be able to have a legal abortion.

The problem with this is actually that they are trying to somehow take female reproduction rights. That being said the underlying idea these people have that women won't lie about rape in any given situation is as far fetched as the idea that they will be able to somehow overturn roe vs wade.

I think the argument against Rep. Eric Turner shouldn't be that women don't lie about rape. Of course women lie. Women are people and people lie.

The problem is, what is the alternative? That women who were actually raped are forced to give birth to the result of the violence perpetrated against them? Actually, poor women are the ones who would be forced to give birth. Subjecting these women to another violence against their bodies is just too cruel. Even if some might try to lie in order to receive the free abortion.

I actually watched the video of this exchange. As much as I hate to admit this, Rep. Eric Turner was quite reasonable and Rep. Linda Lawson was overly emotional. She was nearly crying she was so angry. She apparently worked with rape victims, so she's personally connected to the issue. There's nothing wrong with being emotional in general of course, but in the middle of a state congressional session? And she's so sure about something that's completely wrong!

Thanks to this subreddit I recently learned just how common false rape claims are. I knew they existed, but I had always assumed they were rare because I didn't want to think that a rational woman would lie about such an emotionally and ethically loaded issue when it would so clearly hurt others. I understand lying to get an abortion if there's no other way to get one. I don't understand it when it ruins someone else's life.

The problem is not that this law would allow an unscrupulous woman to get a free abortion; it is that it would encourage an honorable woman to do so.

Reasonable fear. Versus paying for abortions, why not just claim rape and get it for free?

I assume the process is expensive?
