DNA tests at birth should be mandatory. I won't even consider signing a birth certificate until a DNA test is conducted. I don't know how any man can forgo a DNA test. It's madness.

If you like this, try reading Sex at Dawn. It doesn't argue against the concept of sperm competition, but against the concept that we "evolved" for monogamy. There's really not a lot of evidence for monogamy before agriculture, and a LOT of evidence against it (like how no cultures are actually monogamous, non-agricultural foragers are never monogamous, most more primitive cultures aren't monogamous in the slightest, our biology pointing to sperm competition, and that our closest relatives, the chimp and the bonobo, are both polysexual). The more logical conclusion isn't that people are meant to "cheat" on each other, but that people aren't meant to be monogamous, and that group sex is what we evolved for.

Seriously, check it out, it's a really, really good read, I think you'll like it.

10% seems a little low, but the book was written over a decade ago before DNA testing really started becoming more commonly known of and used. The laboratories that do large numbers of tests are now reporting ~30% tests come back saying the man isn't the father.

Some hypothesize that whether a man "thinks" it's his or not that prompts him to get a test may affect the true percentage, but I'm sure there's more than a fair share of men who are "blissfully" unaware that some or all of their children aren't really theirs to offset this idea. Lots of guys don't even want to believe that a woman may run around on them, after all.

I think most of the major ideas have been discredited. Every study I've seen about vaginal muscle interactions with sperm have been pretty wildly amateurish (yes, all the male masturbation studies and female semen retention studies are crap -- the penis shape study is the only vaguely believable one). I'm guessing that it's a field of somewhat limited academic prestige, so no much effort goes into it.

Don't even get me started on his animal examples.

Thanks for the heads-up on this. I always like to see research done by native Brits, as its my neck of the woods, and I can use it.

The reason why I wont feature any studies from the US on my blog is because everyone here says 'well thats just america isnt it lol', like this stuff isnt happening here also.
