Eh, not nearly as bad as buying shiny rocks to validate love, or the whole "giving away" nonsense on the woman's end.

It's certainly not great, but there's a hundred other things to complain about on the subject of marriage.

I agree. It is a throwback to an era that too many men and just as many, if not more, women, still cling to. While extreme feminism and chivalry might seem to be on opposite ends of the spectrum, they both can be so extreme that they end up meeting each other in exalting women's interests above men's. Chivalrous men are radical feminism's useful idiots.

There are two ways to look at this.

First way: Getting down on one knee shows that you giving her the utmost respect and is one thing the man does for the woman throughout the relationship. It's like opening the door for her, promising to provide for and protect her. It's tradition. Just like her cooking for you, doing your laundry, taking care of your children and so forth is just some of the things the woman does for the man in the relationship. tl;dr version: It's the traditional thing to do. of course traditions do get shouted at quite a bit by modern feminists as being degrading to women. Not so much about how they are degrading to men though.

Second way: Getting down on one knee shows subservience and not equality. Much in the same way that buying any sort of expensive but so very impractical diamond ring is just a metaphor for how you are buying her affections/love/marriage with your paycheck, which should also be done away with or at least shared. You give her a diamond ring, she gets you a sport bike (or whatever you like as equivalent). tl;dr version: It's subservient and inappropriate if you want to move away from traditions that may be deemed sexist

By the way. Can you imagine a woman getting down on one knee in front of her boyfriend in such a manner? I can guarantee you that is one tradition that would have been screamed at ages ago for being so very sexist.

It's antiquated. And I know it's "traditional" for men to propose, etc., but I say if you're considering marriage, it's something you should just talk about and decide upon mutually, forgoing the whole rigorous "proposal" aspect. And if you do want to propose for romantic purposes, I'm sure that there are lots of creative ways to do it without feeling like you're begging or disrespecting yourself. That seems like no way to begin a life together.

from a woman's perspective... I couldn't care less - it's sweet but awkward and there are a lot of other ways to show respect and sweetness. Admittedly there are both women and men who can and do care. I sincerely hope that people are self aware enough to seek out someone with similar values on this and many other things.

This is just like Valentines Day. Your modern girl might say she doesn't want to celebrate, thinks it's just a made-up Hallmark holiday, etc. But do you know what? AT MOST, it will have no effect, and more likely than not, it will make her more attracted to you, if you do it right, and not wussy-style. If she gets offended, that's a red flag.

Last Valentine's Day, I wanted to test this out myself, so I wished EVERY woman I met throughout the day, at work, in the store, at the gym, etc., a happy Valentine's Day just to gauge people's reactions: All smiles, thank you's, and a couple blushes.

It's not the flower's, gifts, dinner date itself, but the story. Even if she really doesn't care about Valentines Day, others care, and will ask her about it. Then she'll have something nice to say about you to her girlfriends, sisters, mother, etc.

Don't deny a woman her happiness. It's a man's job to make a woman happy. Every woman deserves this. Just don't spoil her.

I vote for getting down on one knee.
