There is an unwritten law in media: women are always the victims. even when men are more affected by the problem they play tricks to make it seems as if women are the victims.

Few months ago an article from the BBC about suicide in Japan focused about female suicide, why ? male suicide is higher ! they decided to focus on the "suicide rise" ! men are the majority of suicide but because female suicide risen more than men they focused on that.

And today an article from the Guardian instead of comparing men and women they decided to compare between women today and in previous recessions to make it seems as if women are "bigger" victims when in reality according to their own graph on the article it's men the bigger victims.

Even the title of that graph focus on women !

Then absurd comparison to the financial crisis only to make men’s redundancies not sound so bad “3% increase” as oppose to “76%.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Email Guardian, and the journalists (yes they do respond usually) - even if it is just one line saying how misleading it was
Social media post real stats, call them out
Actually do something rather than just post here in an echo chamber where literally everyone agrees with you

The Guardian is to women as the Wall Street Journal is to corporations. Most publications have an inherent bias that needs filter adjustment.

The article points out that women tend to be in industries that are adversely affected by the pandemic, that and I think men are generally more prevalent within the workforce anyway?

Yes, there are job losses happening everywhere and more men are losing their job, but I think they'd commenting on the vulnerability of certain groups. The article also says 6 in 10 job losses are women losing their job. It also looks like women were furloughed more than men, statistically speaking, even when there are more men in the workforce. You can't directly compare numbers.

I think the takeaway from the article is that financial crises are terrible for our jobs and we need to move away from our current economic model. Regardless of men or women differences, men always lose jobs when there's a financial crises of sorts becuase we have one every bloody few years.

And while I slightly disagree with your framing of this article, I do think the media could do more to raise awareness about the current Labour market, what space there is for men in it, and go beyond the symptoms and blame the source (e.g. a shitty economic system that has devalued the work we all do, and a goverment that screwed over parts of the UK where we used to have steady and decent paid jobs and havent give us any re-skilling in return).
