If I could tell this person the kind of straw man they were putting out there, I would. If the genders were reversed and it said that "women defend this kind of discrimination", only then would the bigotry be seen for what it is.

Drinking game for y'all: type "men's rights" into the Reddit search bar and take a shot every time you see someone bring up the term incel, misogynist or "fragile masculinity".

It reads like a reverse-the-sexes parody of the women who criticise #notallmen. But if the post is serious then all I can say is that I’ve only ever seen the opposite happen

Who on earth says "it's weak to be scared after a few bad experiences"? That person would be an arsehole.

I've heard people question whether it's OK to judge and condemn a whole group because of bad experiences, but that's a far cry from judging someone for being "scared".

[–]genkernels 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Iamtheasshole, apparently. "Once bitten twice shy" is often an expression of weakness. Fear should be based in truth. Being burned a few times can mean that the situation is dangerous and should be avoided, but if the damage is not extreme that fear is usually maladaptive, moreso if there are thousands of benign interactions for every harmful one. If you're going to play tennis, you can't be afraid of the ball (I was going to say soccer, but that can actually be a life-altering injury), nor is getting hit by the tennis ball a remotely reasonable reason to not play tennis. With most skills, like riding a bike, one is more likely to have bad experiences prior to obtaining competence, so fear as the result of bad experiences is absolutely a weakness. Similarly, you need to have a respectable fear of some things without being bitten by them, such as in skydiving.

That being said, everyone should be afraid of the cesspit that is the dating pool.

Honestly, I don't know the context of this "joke", but what I do know is that this is a misrepresentitive, bigoted stereotype. If Eminem really said those kinda sexist things, I'm certain that most men (myself included) would be just as quick to judge him as the "woke kids" the original creator mentioned. As I said in the title, if the genders were reversed, only then would the bigoted message be seen.

[–]BloomingBrains 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The bottom one is totally valid, but I’d also agree it applies to Eminem too.

What they are ignoring though is that there are plenty of women who justify misogynistic comments when someone like Eminem (“high status” male) makes them, not just other men.

[–]Evening_Eagle 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If he didn't say all women then they just outed themselves. That's actually an argument i saw on feminist page about men are rapists. If you don't say all, it doesn't mean all.

[–]mrmensplights 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’ll iron man this argument and assume they mean to criticize the whole genre rather than just eminem. Open it up and you can find much more egregious examples of misogynistic sentiments.

The huge difference here is that music and rap are art forms, not political ideologies and not inherently gender activism.

A song can be escapism, a song can explore personal feelings and emotions, a song can be constrained around a specific event like a break up and the feelings around that, and like all art can be used to explore the dark parts of our psyches without advocating for anything. A song can be activism and can be political, but is not inherently so.

Ny contrast, Gender activism is political in nature. Feminism is a political ideology. The goal of political action to change society. We don’t tolerate misogyny in that context and we shouldn’t tolerate misandry either. When you say “let’s build a better world” you can’t start from a place of hate.

By all means, criticize art as something that contributes to or is a reflection of something wrong in society, but don’t let’s pretend a piece of art is equivalent to banging ones fist on a podium while giving a speech to an angry group.

I never heard anyone defend eminem like that lol. Also eminem isn't advocating for women to face a legal curfew and prevent their mobility and then walking it back as "not a serious proposal" when they receive backlash.

[–]Mafumofu02 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The sheer lack of self awareness is ridiculous. Don't feminists like to paint all men with the same brush, then call people who call the out fascists?

[–]ECKohns 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’m not the most well versed listener or Eminem’s music, but I’m pretty sure his music is not about “hating women.” And I’m pretty sure his fans don’t see it as “brave.”
