I think I saw someone on r/MensRights say that this was trending in Europe a couple days ago. Not a peep in the US or anywhere else though.

Don't forget that Boko Haram was doing this long before they kidnapped those girls. Their MO is to oppose Western style education because they see it as imperialistic. In the past they used to line up boys and shoot them. But they'd let the girls go home as long as they promised not to come back to school. It was only when they kidnaped a group of girls instead of letting them go that people started caring about what they were doing though.

Hundreds of Nigerian boys who were kidnapped from their boarding school are seen pleading for their lives in a video released yesterday allegedly by Boko Haram jihadists.

The six-and-a-half-minute footage shows a group of boys – dusty and some seemingly bloodied – surrounding a teenager who says they have been taken by Boko Haram.

When the same thing happened to a group of girls, the entire Western media banded together in unity to call for their return. Let's see if the same happens now - as I highly doubt it.

But what about this? https://napavalleyregister.com/news/national/photos-scenes-from-the-heroic-cave-rescue-of-12-thai-boys-and-their-soccer-coach/collection_8ba2a784-2608-5c83-8df8-54c9dd2b1f9e.html

They got rescued. It was terrifying but people cared.

That is a very interesting point. It is very difficult to figure out what goes into making the news get reported the way that it does.

I wonder if the whole Boko Haram thing comes down to the fact that it is an Islamist terrorist group, and many people already have a preconceived notion of groups like that being biased against women but not men, and therefore it plays into the interests of women's groups and such. While Boko Haram capturing boys gets less attention because it doesn't fit the same narrative these people are looking for.

It would still be biased against boys in that case, but with additional controlling factors.

Or perhaps it is much more complicated than that, and there is some completely alternative explanation. Now I am going to be wondering about this all day...

Edit: Another thought is that the case of the soccer players only involves a group of boys, whereas whenever Boko Haram is kidnapping boys, reporting on that would distract attention away from the stories of the same group kidnapping girls. So it is possible that it might be biased in that particular way. Who knows. I am really going to be thinking about this now...

I've seen a couple of news posts about this, including a video of a boy who was almost kidnapped, but saved. His dad was very happy he was bad, but mentioned they couldn't really celebrate until the other kids were returned.

Honestly though, I wouldn't be surprised if between now and that group of girls that was kidnapped half a dozen other schools have been raided and ignored by Western media. It's far away, and doesn't have real impact on our life/politics here, so most of whatever happens there is ignored.

More than 10,000 boys had been abducted by Boko Haram before the 200 girls. Do you remember how much coverage they got? There's your answer

Sadly, don't hold your breath

I knew it! 300 "students/schoolchildren" from the all-boys school? If it can't be phrased as harming specifically girls or women they use language to infer co-ed status, they won't report specifially boys being harmed.

I'm just surprised they've been this honest even now, a week after the event.

I think at least 344 were freed

It may be a separate attack, that I dont know. But from one attack last week 344 were freed this morning.

Can somebody PLEASE link to an old article when this happened to a group of girls? And all the media and public backlash? where is the outrage now? where are all the groups to help these boys?

Most of them have been saved already.
