What that really irks me about sexist advertising is that there are focus groups, research, and field testing that go into designing an ad (they're expensive to run, after all).

Women do the majority of consumer spending, so they're the main target demographic. When you see advertising shitting on men, it's because the ad tested well with women. THAT bugs me.

It tells me that misandry is a pervasive social problem that decades of gender studies have somehow utterly failed to notice. It's also depressing because it tells me that the average woman apparently harbors a deep disdain for men. I'd rather NOT believe that, but I don't know what other conclusion one should reach.

Saw a fragment of Supergirl yesterday. This show is about as woke as a modern show gets. They made a joke that Superman had trouble changing the diaper of his baby kid. I found it quite disappointing. They put all this "we need to be inclusive, accept other people, trans rights, alien rights" in there, but instead of normalizing a father changing a diaper they put some dumb joke that he had trouble with it.

Very progressive to say women can change diapers but men cannot.

I'd argue that The Simpsons started the trend. In the context of that show I think it works because it's a subversion of the traditional setup of the dad being in clear control of the household and having the most common sense and maturity. However, nowadays it's grown into the norm, and I think it's out of hand by now. It doesn't exactly offend me for the most part (probably because the idea is now so ingrained in our culture) but I do get a little annoyed when television just assumes the man is inherently the dumb, immature one.

In home improvement the dad was not fat by any means while the mom was homely as sin so... not a great example.

Every group should be ridiculed. There can't be enough stupid, fat, conceited white men in comedies. The problem (maybe even the danger) starts when white men are the only ones being ridiculed. Fred Flinstone's masculinity was laughable because Wilma's femininity was laughable. Partisan comedy is part of a man-shaming society, ridiculing men as such isn't.
