I feel fucking terrible.

I'm a male rights activist first and foremost, but today I really dropped the ball.

I work at a gas station and recently we've been extremely understaffed, leading to me working a lot of overtime getting really terrible shifts. I haven't had a good night sleep in a while honestly. I had a 2 pm to 10 pm followed up by a 7am to 3pm the next day. Not the worst shift possible, but I've been irritable all day and its been hard to keep my cool with everyone.

So, working at a gas station, crackheads aren't exactly a rare sight to see. We always have at least 20 a shift, all of whom we usually put up with and not get ourselves too involved in their business.

...But today there was this one guy.

He was a super strange dude, and he kept darting around the condiments and chip isle. I had no idea what he was doing and he was chasing this kid down on one side of the store with a woman who just looked super uncomfortable. He started grabbing the kid and picking her up, and other people started to notice. I swear to God I heard someone muttered to call the cops, and I started realizing the gravity of the situation. I panicked to say the least.

I didn't want to regret not interfering if there was an actual problem and this guy was grabbing this kid, so I didn't know what to do. I just went over to talk to him. I asked him assertively (I'm sure I went a bit overboard, it was all so fast) what he was doing and all that. I kind of went heavy on my dipshit assumption, so I wouldn't be surprised if it came off even worse than I remember. While I fumbled to understand what was happening, this guy started to get super pissed. More angry than any customer I've had before.

Apparently this was his kid but he was separated from the mom. I still don't know all the details but I just wanted to make sure everyone was safe and there were no problems.

I never got to say sorry because I was shortly dragged off by my manager and I feel like I owe that man some sort of apology. I'm just glad I at least didn't call the police before it was too late.

So that's why I feel terrible. I'm completely in the wrong and I don't know how to move on from this. Its tearing me apart. It's been an awful fucking day and I feel like I've violated my beliefs and morals in assuming this guy was being creepy when he wasnt. How can I move on from this? Do you think this guy will come back during a later shift? Should I try and apologize if I seem him again? I don't know where to go from here.
