Check out this DOOZIE;

"The group argued the women don't deserve equal pay, but rather they deserve to be paid more than the men's team. Specifically, they argued for "at least triple the compensation provided for in the men’s agreement"

Here's a big WTF?

[–]Lester_Lichfield 78 points79 points80 points 4 years ago (94 children) | Copy Link

I think they've confused media hype for actual popularity.

[–]rainbow_bro_bot 74 points75 points76 points 4 years ago (89 children) | Copy Link

This.

Women's sports is nowhere near as popular as men's. (Might be something to do with the fact national women's soccer teams are easily beaten by amateur high-school boys teams.)

However the media is obviously driven by feminism and media articles are always on the side of feminists, report from a feminists point of view and advocate for what feminists want. This gives feminists a false impression their sport is more popular than it really is and makes them feel entitled to far more than they deserve.

Women's sport competitions don't have half the coverage the average, bore me out of my mind, men's events have. Half... I'm being generous. Don't have one twentieth of the coverage.

Give equal coverage to all sports, first, and after that is a thing, we can have this discussion.

Unless someone is an insider of a sport, the average person can't find news about women's events or matches, be we speaking about soccer (it's called football; the american version is rugby in body armor, not football), basketball, judo, mma, gymnastics or synchronized swimming!

I don't agree with the women's team demanding more pay than their male counterpart - that is just unfair, even more if we consider it's a national representation issue being discussed - but women's sports have been considered a side show or a joke, historically. And that is disgusting.

[–]rainbow_bro_bot 48 points49 points50 points 4 years ago (42 children) | Copy Link

In recent years in the UK Women's football (soccer) has basically been forced on us despite noone asking for it. And despite it receiving coverage and everyone having a chance to see it people still aren't interested in it.

[–]LetTheRainsFall 21 points22 points23 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My mother, 67 years old, has been a football fan all her life. Goes to every single game, home and away. Buys the shirts, scarves, etc. I asked her if she watched womens football. Her response?

No, it's bloody crap. Mens is better.

If a diehard football fan can't get interested in women's football, how can they expect anyone else to?

[+]qyrion -27 points-26 points-25 points 4 years ago (40 children) | Copy Link

Nowadays who actually requests for something? That's the job of the marketeers: finding the next thing you don't want but must have.

I'll repeat myself: historically, women's sports have been considered a side show or a joke.

That is disrespect to an athletes dedication and commitment, even more when we're speaking with national representatives - on that level, it turns into disrespect to the country and yourself.

[–]Alakozam 40 points41 points42 points 4 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

That is disrespect to an athletes dedication and commitment, even more when we're speaking with national representatives - on that level, it turns into disrespect to the country and yourself.

Nah. It's just boring. People like you who want to assign some bullshit meaning to things need to chill the fuck out.

[+]qyrion -21 points-20 points-19 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Can you put in that level of commitment and dedication for a sport?

If you can, I'll rest my case right here, right now.

[–]Alakozam 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Would it matter? Boring is boring. You can spend your entire life playing an instrument and still not have anyone really care.

Do you even understand the concept of spectator sports or even simple excitement? Incite something from your viewers. That's all there is to it. And they don't, for most people.

Why watch a B grade movie when there's so many A grades? Etc. Not enough time in the world to waste on things that don't entertain.

[+]qyrion -6 points-5 points-4 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Not the best example. B movies have good value for usually low budge and expectations, even more considering the average "blockbuster" coming forward nowadays.

It used to be T&A, nowadays it's all about special effects and big explosions, preferably with some big 80's or 90's nostalgia value.

After that remark, I risk you're the average couch coach, looking for a quick way to vent some pent up adrenaline. If it floats your boat, be merry.

Both the USA and Sweden national soccer teams have been thrashed by amateur schoolboy teams. I'm sure there's more examples too.

Gosh I wonder why some people think professional women's soccer is a joke.

[–]qyrion -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Well, I can tell you I saw a professionally trained, minor leagues football team, being trashed by an highschool girls team.

Does my example counts?

[–]rainbow_bro_bot 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's nice. Run along and play.

[–]bardownhalfclap 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Proof?

[–]qyrion -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Let me call the 90's and check if anyone had a readily available camera at all time with them.

[–]Tipnin 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

The only women’s professional sport that I can think of off the top of my head that draws a crowd is women’s tennis and that’s due to Serena and Venus Williams.

[–]rainbow_bro_bot 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or the beach volleyball where they wear bikinis.

I'll probably be downvoted to oblivion for saying that, but the truth is most viewers of that sport watch it for the women in bikinis, not the actual sport.

[–]__2st__ 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Who are both trannies so not really women.

[–]qyrion -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

Who and what?

Tennis is not my cup of tea.

I do enjoy women's judo, MMA, gymnastics, football, volleyball, indoors football (crazy fast and quite brutal) and handball.

[–]Tr0ddie 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

They're not gonna fuck you bro. Relax.

[–]qyrion -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

I'm already taken.

[–]Boomhower113 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

See? Even you won’t watch women’s basketball. It’s universal!

[–]qyrion 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not into basketball. It was never a thing for me.

[–]JakeDC 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

Why give equal coverage to something people don't want to see?

[+]qyrion -10 points-9 points-8 points 4 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Who says that?

Women's sports is enjoyable. And usually a lot more competitive and technical than male sports.

Those women are often out to prove they can master the sport, against a crowd first concerned about the bits inside their uniform.

[–]JakeDC 27 points28 points29 points 4 years ago* (16 children) | Copy Link

Ratings and revenue say that. Your subjective opinions about men's vs. women's sports are questionable. I don't watch men's sports and say "you know what would be even better? This, but played by people who are weaker, slower, and less athletic". Elite women's soccer teams lose to teenage boys.

But none of this ultimately maters. For all the effort we spend getting behind the USWNT - which is fine - US women's soccer leagues continue to lose money and fail. The current league used to get subsidies from US Soccer to say afloat (I am not sure what the current state of play is). The WNBA can't grow an audience, loses money, and needs millions of dollars in subsidies from the NBA to keep operating. Women's soccer in England is basically an charity run by men's clubs. Nobody wants it. In general, women's sports products are not as good as their male counterparts. People know this, and ratings and revenue reflect this.

[+]qyrion -6 points-5 points-4 points 4 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

If we stopped comparing women and men when playing any sport, that would be a good start. That's part of the problem.

[–]JakeDC 22 points23 points24 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is unavoidable. I do not have infinite time and resources to follow sports. Nobody does. Of course people are going to compare sports products and follow the ones that they enjoy and that are most compelling. We compare all products in the marketplace. That comparison doesn't go well for women's sports, but there is nothing wrong with that. Sports is an entertainment business, and people are allowsed to consume what they are entertained by and avoid what doesn't entertain them.

Male models don't do as well as female models. And that is OK too.

[–]IDKhlpme 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

If we stopped comparing women and men when playing any sport, that would be a good start.

Says the redditor bitching about how men's sports aren't as competitive or entertaining.

[–]qyrion -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

No. I'm saying that we shouldn't compare how a sport is played, using the gender of the athlete as a metric.

[–]bcocoloco 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

I think it boils down to a lot of people want to watch the best people in the world at a sport because they want to see the sport being played at the highest level. Men just naturally set better records than women.

[–]qyrion -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Men and women are biologically different.

What implies that a man performs better at a given task because of gender?

No peepee pass.

[–]bcocoloco 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Okay forgive me but in the context of sports I was assuming we were using AAB genders but I’ll lay it out for you anyway.

If the task is to lift the heaviest object a man will obviously have numerous advantages over a woman including bone density, muscle and skeletal leverage points, generally larger size in general, etc.

[–]qyrion -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

AAB gender

That was a first for me. Wasn't even aware of that expression.

Here is my problem: "better" instead of "how much".

The first is a judgment of value, the second is an objective measurement.

Because men and women are not usually pitted against each other because biology is a thing, who performs better is not even a thing. Doesn't add anything of relevance to the conversation.

And if we were to go down that slippery slope, we'd be bound to find activities where regardless of gender, biology is outcompeted by technique, strategy and skill.

[–]bcocoloco 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It doesn’t help that the thing people want to see is who can lift the most, not who can do it with the best form. There are a reason the sports that are popular are popular

[–]qyrion 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't really follow weight lifting but if the top athlete was all about thrashing safety - which comes from technic - over sheer brute force for setting another mark I'd risk they wouldn't be the top for that much time.

[–]bardownhalfclap 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Too bad the men are better in the areas of technique and skill also, allowing them to execute strategies more effectively.

[–]qyrion -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I find myself in a place where I can't decide if I should try to reason or laugh.

[–]BlackFedoraMedia 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Women's sport competitions don't have half the coverage the average, bore me out of my mind,

Now, I'm not a sports guy I don't watch or play them. But how the hell are you going to say men playing the exact same sport is boring? The gender of the players really shouldn't impact your enjoyment of a game.

[–]No_Hair_3041[S] 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The men's sport goes at a ridiculously faster pace. The men's game you see more individual athleticism. Give the two an honest try and tell me what you think. Women's game is very technical and slow.

[–]qyrion -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

At least be honest and put the full quote in your reply.

It bores me because I can predict how a given sport will be played by men.

[–]BlackFedoraMedia 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I really don't see how the rest of your comment would add any defense for you. And so what are women more spontaneous on the field or what? Because I don't know if you're a regular on this sub, but you might have seen a professional woman's soccer team got thrashed by a high school soccer team so I doubt they're that much better by virtue of being women.

[–]qyrion -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Independently of gender, there are bad teams and bad athletes on every sport. Not the point being discussed here and not even a good one to make.

What seems to be under discussion here is "because woman, then bad sport", boiled down.

And for me, yes, I get bored following the men's sports because I can predict the way it's played. On women's events, not so much. So, same sport, different outcome. Not better because, just different.

[–]BlackFedoraMedia 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Do-do really not see the hypocrisy in what you're saying. We shouldn't judge things by gender, yet male sports are constantly more predictable. You're not catching why this sound so contradictory. And you can talk about coverage all you want but maybe it's because most people just aren't interested. Always a possibility.

[–]SleeplessAndTired 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is a joke, have you ever seen the WNBA? It's like the amusing halftime show for an actual game, you switch to it to make fun of it.

[–]benjamin_bt 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Nah, I tried watching Formula W series and it sucks. It is hyped to heavens but it really is like an amateurs cup even though it's supposed to be the "next big thing" in motorsport.

[–]qyrion 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Formula W? Never heard about it. What are they racing?

[–]benjamin_bt 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's W series, the women's division. They race a formula car, specced at about the level of a Formula 3 car.

[–]qyrion 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That sounds interesting. Thanks for the recommendation.

[–]benjamin_bt 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It sounds interesting, it's a pity it isn't really.

[–]qyrion 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'll have to check it out and make my mind on it.

[–]RansomStoddardReddit 26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Neither of those matter. What matters is revenue generated - sponsorships, marketing agreements, broadcast rights, Jersey sales, ticket sales, etc. Women generate less, they get paid less - period. Everything else is just a smoke screen of bullshit. - wins, number of world cups, etc. does not matter. Players on an 0-16 NFL franchise will make more money then a woman on the World Cup championship team because the football players generate more revenue.

[–]YoshiTora23 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Then by this logic, their push would screw over the WNBA so they have almost no media hype and are trying to still get equal pay compared to the NBA

[–]salsonwheels 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The NBA are the ones paying for most of the WNBA in the 1st place. When an entire sports league relies on another to keep people paid, it's time to close up shop.

[–]YoshiTora23 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’ll never close up shop though. They will continue to get handouts because they’re “oppressed

[–]The-Benis 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And everybody clapped!

[–]ShitLordOfTheRings 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't mind that - they should be free to negotiate for whatever they think they can get. It's a business, and the U.S. Soccer Federation makes a lot of money with them, so that's fine. The hypocrisy is grating, though.

[–]PleaeDontLookAtMe -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That was the men's team saying the women should be paid triple, specifically because they had been shafted for years.

[–]putin_vor 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They haven't performed at men's level... ever, so "shafted" they were not.

[–]PleaeDontLookAtMe -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Tell that to the men's team that made this demand?

[–]Willyfisterbut 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They filed an amicus brief, so it was more like taking a position in a case rather than making a demand.

[–]YourPillsAintWorkin52 points 4 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

They know they already have a far better deal than the men.

[–]notmythrownawayy 27 points28 points29 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I know a number of women who have never worked a day in their life just lived off child support.

[–]YourPillsAintWorkin6 points 4 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Certainly true. I was speaking specifically about these female soccer players vs the male soccer players.

[–]notmythrownawayy 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My mistake. I thought u meant women in general.

[–]domnulsta 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

From what I remember, they chose a contract that offered less money, but a bunch of other benefits that men don't get through their higher paid contracts. But now they want equal pay AND the benefits. That's equality, aye?

[–]Sensitive-Cherry-398 19 points20 points21 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I believe they want it now until equality works against their wants or needs, then it's back to sexism.

[–]JohnRandolph 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

These women are vastly overpaid for playing worse than high school boys. Their management should just shut down the women's team and focus their attention on promoting their money-making assets.

[–]rc20kj 32 points33 points34 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How about equal work for equal pay.

[–]Dankincense_n_myrhh 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They want equal pay yet seeing half the seats are filled in that picture is pretty ironic

[–]Specific-Ant-3065 18 points19 points20 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

What about the people stuck behind that monstrosity of a banner that equally paid to watch a ball game?

[+]ECSfrom113 -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Tell me you've never been to a soccer match without telling me you haven't been to a soccer match.

Most places have signage when you enter that section that says "this section is for standing/chanting, and your view may be obstructed" followed by directives to the box office if you would like to change areas.

Or just, you know, mind your own business cuz that ain't your money being spent? Pfft.

[–]Specific-Ant-3065 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yeah? Cool story, didn't know that, it was just a comment- why you so mad?

[+]ECSfrom113 -9 points-8 points-7 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Because that was an ignorant comment.

[+]ECSfrom113 -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]-themanintheironmask 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Hmm, here I was thinking you were being downvoted for being condescending and unpleasant. If you had had the intentions to actually teach him why he's wrong as opposed to tell him why you're right, I'm positive you would have been upvoted instead.

[+]ECSfrom113 -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oof, now you're appealing to them and their ignorance? 🤮

[–]-themanintheironmask 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Disagreeing with the way somebody argues a point does not mean that you disagree with their point, nor does it mean that you condone the behaviour or ideas that they are opposing. All I said was you got downvoted for being unpleasant and condescending, not your idea is unpalatable. But go off

[–]GenTycho 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuck it, give these womens teams any pay they want, but make the stipulation that they only get paid by the revenue their league makes watch them walk it back or lose their league entirely when it collapses after ending up bankrupt.

[–]JakeInBake 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Someone at U.S. Soccer needs to dump this whole group. They all make over six figures and still bitch. When given a proposal similar to the men...they bitch. Cut them loose. Bring in fresh blood. Let these gals bitch while driving a school bus.

[–]jsully66 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]xdzgor 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We all know that women’s soccer is disproportionately more successful than men’s soccer. If the pay reflects that I don’t really have an issue with it, but there should be some pretty basic math on this and if they’re asking for more than that it’s going to look horrible for them.

Define “more successful”.

If you are referring to wins and world cups that is not the issue at hand. It’s revenue generated that matters. Women’s sports generate less revenue they get paid less, period. You can be the worlds best bricklayer and work just as hard or harder as the worst starting QB in the NFL, but you won’t get paid as much as the QB because your work generates less economic value. That is reality.

You notice you had to go to apples and oranges between a bricklayer and a quarterback? No, you know that doesn’t make sense. Two completely different jobs

But you also know you can’t use a comparison between women’s victories and men’s either, because the men suck for the most part even if they generate more money.

My previous comment still stands, if they’re asking for it proportionately to their success I don’t have an issue with it.

Because they have had success doesn’t mean they generate more revenue. As mentioned above, they want a bigger piece of a pie that is not on their table.

So you’re saying the champion WNBA team should make more money than the worst NBA team.

[–]GreatOneLiners -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Are they winning gold medals against competition around the world?

[–]wibo58 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Are they bringing in enough money to pay for they they want?

[–]Uesugi1989 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a business, nothing more. LeBron James doesn't get paid that much more than the average NBA player because he is the better player, he does because he brings much more revenue to the NBA franchise. Nothing else matters for a business. The same can be said for actors and actresses, models, singers, porn stars etc

Cool, so what is needed is Men's team vs Women's team then, should be easy if the men suck. How much you wanna bet Rapinoe will NEVER take that bet? They do not bring in the revenue for it, it wasn't until 2016 that they even made more than men's team and that was less than 2% more, every other year the men were bringing in 10-15% more revenue each year without winning. Fact is that getting to the quarter finals by the men's team is harder and more of an achievement than winning the women's championship. The quality of players, drive and commitment in the men's league is just higher so getting to the finals at all is a higher achievement.

I'd love to see a men vs women series. Women are so strong.

[–]GreatOneLiners -5 points-4 points-3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So you don’t know the difference between women and men? Another apples to oranges comparison, like what’s wrong with you people?

Can you really not admit that they need to be paid better than men because they are more successful, and it’s a drop in the bucket compared to whatever they spend all that Olympic money on anyway:

[–]SpunkyDred 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

apples to oranges

But you can still compare them.

[–]Zelda2hot -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Obviously you can compare them, but the whole point of the idiom is that it's a false analogy. I could compare you to the helpful bots, but that too would be comparing apples-to-oranges.

SpunkyDred and I are both bots. I am trying to get them banned by pointing out their antagonizing behavior and poor bottiquette. My apparent agreement or disagreement with you isn't personal.

I'm well aware of the difference but when people start saying equal pay it assumes one can do everything the other can so let's find out. As for them being paid more? Nope, because that is not how businesses work. You can be the absolute best but if you don't bring in the money you won't get paid much and as far as the women's team goes they did not bring in more money than the men until 2016 and even then it was less than 2% more. This was AFTER their win and AFTER all their success, they STILL could not out revenue the men by much. On regular years where the women do not win the men bring in 10-15% more money. Tell me again why the lower earner should get paid more? This might look like an achievement based thing but it's not, it is 100% a business and always has been and until they bring in the revenue to get the power they won't be paid three times more than the men. This is all ignoring the fact that the courts found that taking in all the benefits and their guaranteed pay (for all on the team) the women actually made more money than the men who only get paid if they win.
