Is this true??? I didn’t know he was real life stalking and terrifying women!!

I like the show cause it portrays what we are up against. I dated a guy that had this savior complex. He wasn’t a murderous psycho (I hope) like in You, but I do like that tv is showing a more accurate picture of what women need to watch out for in dating and the consequences of putting your guard down.

Ugh, what?? I always respected Penn Badgley for going out of his way in every interview to emphasize what a monster Joe is and how much he hates the character. Guess it turns out he's just trash too?

Another one bites the dust, I guess. I'm glad I quit watching the show. Season 1 was incredible, but the Season 2 was awful. In Season 1, the message of the show was "sometimes the dangerous man in your life might be the mild-mannered 'nice' guy you keep running into, so stay vigilant" whereas the message of Season 2 seemed to be "look! See! Women are just as crazy as men!!1"

I thought that was Jamie Dornan who did that.

Me too. I read an article a few years ago about Jamie Dornan doing that. He said It felt kind of exciting, in a really sort of dirty way. Imagine making women uncomfortable/scared/terrific getting men excited. LVMs everywhere.

This was an awesome critical analysis, thanks for sharing!

That was a good read, I hope this conversation continues to get louder. Media needs to be held accountable. I also like the YouTube channel Pop Culture Detective for excellent analysis of misogynistic tropes perpetuated in movies.

^ here's one titled Predatory Romance in Harrison Ford Movies

SIDE THOUGHT that goes on a bit of tangent and comes back to the main point: i'm just now making this connection but.. does anyone else notice how common it is for men to be into movies and make that a part of their personality? There's nothing wrong with liking movies, but it's this thing where they are all updated on all the latest movies and that's what they talk about about amongst each other. Back in my pickme days when I hung out with men a lot (blech) I noticed that if they had nothing to talk about men could always talk to each other about whatever movie was new - like, the manosphere is somehow on the same page in that arena? Which is kind of sad because we see how woefully lacking their relationship building skills are? Maybe I sound like a weird alien cuz i've never been that interested in staying updated on movies, i really don't give a shit about marvel or dc or whatever. BUT I work in a job where I see how much money men spend on superhero movie artwork. IT'S A LOT. I've seen men spend thousands of dollars on this shit. Alongside sports merch, I see time after time how much men value their movie worlds and fantasy heroes. These corporations know how much these boys are out here spending on merch, too. It's wild. ANYWAY I say all of that because it reinforces just how impactful the misogynistic tropes in media are. Just like how porn lies to men about what sex is, movies lie to them too, and most of them don't question it.

Before the original video was deleted, the comments were full of angry men confirming what matthew is saying but also being angry at the women for laughing at the truth. Here's the video in question

You know what’s sad? Women eat this shit up. Swoon over narratives with toxic, murderous men, the so called “dark romance” genre.

[–]katiekat0214FDS Newbie 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't believe that at all.

[–]Outrageous-KnowledgeFDS Newbie 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh they do. I wish they didn’t but being involved in fandom I’ve seen some stuff. You’ll be surprised how popular “dark romances” are. Then there’s the “serial killer” girlfriends. Obviously not all women are into this, same not all women are into kink.
