Makes me laugh that feminists usually hate the hard right the most-yet they both treat men the same way-as tools to make money, as machines to be used, and disposed of when something better comes along. Both have so much in common yet its rarely mentioned.

Summary: This article talks about historical contracts between the sexes and how they influence modern day opinion.

It illustrates how modern feminism and conservative traditionalism can be linked in wanting service from men as their goal for the benefit of society and women.

[–]FeierInMeinHose 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

The key difference is that with traditionalism men also get the power in any relationship, so while they are the ones responsible for everything they are also the ones who reap the rewards for everything. With progressive feminism men are essentially seen as a slave class.

[–]Itrusttheinternett[S] 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

As mentioned in the article however, traditionalism is asking that men sacrifice their lives (metaphorically, and sometimes literally) so that women, and children can live in comfort and safety.

[–]DouglasWallace 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Quite so, with authority should come responsibility. But at least men would be respected and admired for being willing—even potentially—to fight for defence of their family/tribe/nation.

[–]Itrusttheinternett[S] 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I personally would prefer my wife to work if I was to work so that each partner in the relationship could enjoy their life as much as the other.

What is to stop a trad wife from hiring a maid and doing very little in the relationship if the male can support that lifestyle?

[–]DouglasWallace 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The trouble with concepts like 'trad wife' is that most people use them to refer to a 'golden past' that—if it ever did exist—was so short-lived that it is impossible to say that it was socially maintainable.

Personally, I think nothing is more important than children. That's why I supported my wife as a stay-at-home mum while we had young children. She then started being a bigger and bigger part of our businesses, so I engaged an au pair to share in childcare. Until she went off the rails, my wife was a good mum and a good worker for the family but, yes, she did end up doing 'very little in the relationship'.

For a woman who has no children, or to the extent that the children are older and look after themselves, I see no reason not to take account of that fact that (feminist statistic aside) washing clothes takes about 5 minutes, the machine does the rest; washing dishes ditto assuming you have a dishwasher; and unless she is compulsive about having a clean and tidy home and home-cooked food, there really isn't much to do all day around a home.

I'm sorry to hear about your wife.

My mother went off the rails. It was incredibly tough. My dad struggled as a noble member of the working class pretending they were middle class. He wasn't a great man personality wise, and he did a lot of things that make me ashamed, but he is my dad and he took care of me and my sister. He went to work for us, worked overtime, came home and looked after us. He did it for love. We had a computer and internet connection. Although there were many things he could have done better, he gave us a life.

[–]DouglasWallace 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'll tell you one thing about parenting: it is dead easy to think your parents were awful until you are a parent yourself. Then you realise that just being an 'average' parent takes a hell of a lot of effort, and when realise your kids are looking at all the things you do 'wrong', pointing out all the things you did right doesn't come into it.

Then you become a grandparent and have a real laugh!

[–]Itrusttheinternett[S] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

hahaha. I'm sure your kids love you. I should phone my dad.

I came to that realisation as well. It's easy to criticise, it's a lot harder to perform.

I would disagree. Conservative traditionalism placed a lot of responsibilities upon men .They had to the money makers ,protective , ethical , responsible , strong mentally and psychically and in general the opposite of a what we call a simp today . Progressive Feminism on the other hand absolves women from having to accept any responsibility for their life's choices and instead chooses to blame men for all their problems.

[–]Dronerman -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I did but we do not live in the ancient times anymore. Things are much different today on how we define conservative traditionalism and progressive feminism since ancient Greece.

[–]Itrusttheinternett[S] 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It doesn't just talk about ancient times. It gives direct quotes from Christina Hoff sommers (modern feminist), and Patrice Lewis (modern anti-feminist)

[–]Itrusttheinternett[S] 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Except both philosophies ask for the service of males for state and family (and women).

This is about uncovering patterns in history.

[–]Iceman_Hottie 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think the point was while both ask for the service of men, traditionalists give something back in return, while progressivists consider the benefits that men's services bring an entitlement thus it doesn't even compute that men are human ad deserve something for their service.

[–]poobobo -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If the whole think is about Greece I'm glad I gave up

[–]Dronerman -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The whole article is a delirium of crap. There nothing useful for someone to waste time reading.

Lewis’s argument above that boys are juicing with testosterone and need “taming” reveals an unbroken, and mythical conception of men stemming from ancient times – and it is wrong. Men are not born as wild animals in a testosterone-fuelled psychosis waiting to tear people limb from limb

Here's my fundamental disagreement with this article and the title of this thread.

Lewis's argument is absolutely right. Protecting and providing is exactly the role of men. The difference between conservative traditionalism (Lewis) and progressive feminism is entitlement.

Progressive feminism says women are entitled to the protection and providing that men offer. The progressive feminist looks around at the unprecedented security and abundance in our society, assumes that those things are representative of a reasonable baseline of expectations, and then extrapolates the rest of her world view from there. "I deserve love. I deserve a wedding ring. I deserve a house. I deserve a car. I deserve loyalty."

Similarly, a conservative traditionalist says, yes, protecting and providing is the proper role of men. And that's correct. But not similarly, a conservative traditionalist says NO, neither a woman nor women collectively are entitled to the protection and providing that men offer, simply by virtue of being women. A woman should be expected to do as much characterological work as a man is in order to be worthy of a desirable and successful man.

Unlike the progressive feminist, the conservative traditionalist looks around at the unprecedented security and abundance in our society, and does NOT assume that those things are representative of a reasonable baseline of expectations, and then extrapolate the rest of her world view from there. There's gratitude for the security and abundance she was born into. "I'll earn love. I'll earn a wedding ring. I'll earn a house. I'll earn a car. I'll earn loyalty." That gratitude comes from good parenting.

This article criticizes the conservative traditionalist woman, which suggests to any individual man that the conservative traditionalist woman is to be avoided just like the progressive feminist. It suggests that a man should not settle for less than complete escape from the protector provider role.

The truth is that there is no escape from that role. When women skirt their responsibilities to be worthy of men, then successful men simply import traditional women from poorer countries to marry. Likewise, when men skirt their responsibilities to be worthy of women, then desirable women simply "import" manlier and more psychotic men by destabilizing their own society to the point that it can't defend itself against enemy countries.

The appropriate prescription, then, it to (A) man up, and (B) snatch up a conservative traditional woman.

[–]shhsue727292jshhq827 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

In situations like the titanic, where women and children were given the lifeboats, I highly doubt they stopped each woman and made sure she was this and that, it was all done purely on the basis of her being a woman. It's always been purely on the basis of women being women. They inherently get the privileges.

We are no longer living in primitive times. It isn't necessary for men to protect and provide, and keeping up with that gender role only creates an inequality within society, especially since the large majority of women have abolished the majority of their gender roles. We still haven't started mass importing women, I highly doubt that'd ever happen, and changing the women that are already here is probably more realistic and intelligent in the long term.

Don't tell men to accept their problems, that is a large issue within the male community.

The general dynamic wasn't ever fair, and getting a traditional woman won't help. Studies routinely show that being a stay at home wife/mother is the happiest career out of any profession. With that position you really have time to think, and work on yourself, you have a desire to create, and read, you have an ability to turn yourself into whatever type of human you want to be, without large distractions or hardships, like work. That creates a massive inequality. Things like nature, and art, and reading, and general self improvement have been labeled as female things. Most people wont get a trad wife, and when many men live alone and think things like cleaning are womens duties, they're destined to fail at life. These new generations of men are man-children and need to learn how to do the whole circus, not just the grunt work. The grunt work will put their gender far, far behind the other.

Realistically, with where we're going, its virtually impossible to know what's going to happen and what we should do. We've perverted nature and I don't know if we're ever going back. I'd say pure equality is the best option. Use as much eduaction as you can to improve your position, both parents work good jobs, they also invest, and they hire tutors, and mentors, and babysitters, etc. The parents get vacations, and they work on crafting themselves, etc. We can make it so each party gets a decent share, and an equal share. This is the option. Men don't owe anything significant to women, women don't owe anything significant to men, but if they combine together and put in the effort, they can each get something decent back out.

[–]applesanddragons 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

In situations like the Titanic, men are the ones who insisted upon saving the women and children first. You clearly don't know anything about the Titanic, because this very fact of the catastrophe was even portrayed in the movie. The strong and brave men chose to stay behind, sacrificed their seats for the children and women, and tried to find some debris to float on. The weak and cowardly men made sure to find positions on life boats to save themselves, despite there being insufficient space for all of the women and children. You clearly have also never been a parent or a husband, because virtually every parent and husband would tell you that they would sacrifice their spot on a life boat for their child or wife too.

This subreddit appears to have been taken over by the weak and cowardly men of society who have managed to delude themselves that airplanes and smart phones have somehow liberated them from the principles of natural selection. In your progressive attempt to evade your responsibilities to provide and protect, and to re-invent the relationship between men and women, what's really going to happen is you're going to hand your entire civilization over to stronger and more psychotic men who don't share your willful blindness about the relationship between men and women, and who won't have any reservations about taking your wives, daughters, enslaving you, your children and your children's children for generations to come. So enjoy.

Men have been conditioned to feel like they have to, like it's the right thing to do, even you have. Why would a woman be more valuable than a man? Especially since most of the jobs were hard labor, the men were likley more significant to society than the women. Sacrificing yourself is a good deed, but expecting a whole gender to be the ones to do it is just wrong and sexist. Not sacrificing yourself doesn't make you weak or cowardly, it makes you normal. There is no logical reasoning why a woman would be more valuable than a man, and why the men should be the ones to make the sacrifice. I think in logic, not ignorant morality placed upon me. Sure, they would, but expecting only the men to be noble, is clearly and purely ignorant and sexist. Be prepared to question your opinions and morals, most people aren't, try to improve yourself to the highest standard, that is nobility.

Actually, considering around 4/5 people died fairly early on in primitive times, compared with modern times where the very, very large majority lives and reproduces, natural selection is virtually non-existent, which is a problem, but that's another discussion for another time. In more primitive times, yes, it was usually the male unit who had to make the sacrifice, it wouldn't of worked without that being the case, but we no longer hunt bears, run from tigers, and travel through frozen wastelands for a living, and chances are, we won't ever go back to that, at least not anytime soon, in our lifetimes, or in any form we know of today. Now, it works with everything being equal, and it works better. There is no logical reasoning why the male should inherently be the one to make all of the sacrifices, think about that. This country isn't going to flip upside down, it's crap, and it's going to stay crap, but the chances of what you've described happening are very, very low, and if it were to ever happened again, the climate would change in an instant, and men would take a stand, like they always have. Seriously, why, in 2021, would the husband not jumping in front of a bullet, or taking on the largest workload, or anything of the sorts fail society? It truthfully wouldn't. We are finally in a point in society where things are starting to equalize, for both genders. Look around you. Stop acting like a cave-man. You don't have to go out in the woods and kill a bear. All you have to do is scan items at a grocery store, or pour concrete, or pick up plastic bottles. There is no logical reasoning for why your wife can't also do that. It wouldn't harm anything, it would actually help. There is no logical reasoning for why you should do all of the sample favors, hold the door open, etc. There is no logical reasoning for why anything shouldn't be equal. You, like most other people, have taken the morals your parents and society has given you, and you've never, ever questioned them, you've just taken them, and engrained them so far into your minds structure, that's its virtually impossible to pull them out. I won't talk about examples of ignorant morality, as most are very controversial to most people, and it's a large difficult process to shake someone's deep moral structure, especially for some of those morals. But I will talk about ignorant teachings blindly followed, to show that things like that do happen. Why do you celebrate your birthday? There is no logical reasoning, it's just something people do without thinking much about. It isn't that rare that you'd be born after living in the womb. Why is that specific day special? Are you oh so valuable to society that your birthdate needs to be worshipped? Jesus? Why isn't the conception date celebrated? Why not when you start working? Or when you turn 18? Don't you think some of those dates would have more significance? Why do you eat cake on your birthday? Etc.
