Hire a good tax account, let them make the call. Your stbx is unlikely to listen to your opinion.

Do yourself a favor, file and get the divorce final early in the year to simplify your taxes for next year.

My ex filed separately, even though she had zero income. I had to fight to be able to claim one of our children, but ultimately it would have been better to file together.

It makes sense to file separately sometimes when one person makes a lot of income or has substantial losses from a business, and some other scenarios.

I put it into my divorce agreement that we file jointly for the last year and split the return or payment owed.
