"#MeToo is over if we don’t listen to ‘imperfect victims’ like Amber Heard"; Gross article denies Men can be victims of abuse & encourages people to never believe Men. Individuals such as this are why so many Men feel uncomfortable about opening up or seeking support.

The debate over “sex addiction” is interesting. It’s not in the DSM-5 but you can use code F52. 8 13 “other specified sexual dysfunction”. I’m all for as much ethically research as possible and any interventions that improves lives. That being said, I’d be very worried about a “sex addiction” pill. Knowing the med system, they’d start throwing that at every sexually frustrated male who seeks mental health treatment

Such a pill might already exist: fluoxetine, which lowers libido. That said, since sexual addiction is often linked to past emotional, physical or sexual trauma, and fluoxetine helps at least somewhat with PTSD symptoms, we should not hold such medication back from a patient who could benefit from it and who has made an informed decision to take that medication knowing its potential side effects.

But I do agree we should not let feminists manage the health system. We should be thankful not all women in the medical system are feminists.

Antidepressants, especially if used in this manner, can lead to permanent erectile dysfunction. Including when you stop taking the medicine.

That's not been my experience. I've been taking it for a few years now for PTSD and MDD and while it's lowered my libido, it certainly hasn't killed it. I can still perform on request.

It is a side effect to watch out for.

A lot of guys on r/malementalhealth have run into it, and the theory over there is that it's more common than drug companies let on.

It doesn't mean that it's a bad medicine or anything, but it is a documented side effect that can be rather severe.

My speculation is that using it for sex addiction would require higher doses than what's typical for depression though, which would increase the risk of that side effect. Moreover, it's likely that the same pharmacological mechanism is responsible for both decreased libido and erectile dysfunction (likely through the stimulation of TAAR1, which results in permanent charges to that receptor and the related monamine receptors that it appears to help modulate).

But of course we can't know that for sure.

Like a trained seal?

Where's your own volition, or has that been neutered by the medication, leaving only external demand?

[–]JosephsonAdam 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't take fluoxetine to lower my libido (that's just a side effect). I take it to moderate PTSD and MDD symptoms. I was just describing the symptoms on myself, not saying whether they are good or bad.

[–]UnconventionalXY 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It was the "perform on request" comment that got me as though your own spontaneity was gone and only performing on external request.

I know when I took fluoxetine I was like a zombie with no will of my own, although I did still respond to external demands that I do things. I did not take it long for that reason.

I don’t even think it would necessarily be nefarious but MDs can be very lazy and fall into . “if patient presents with X symptom you diagnose them with Y disorder and prescribe Z medication”. If they’re going to add “sex addiction” to the DSM, particularly if there is a med treatment involved, I hope they have an extremely clear, non subjective distinction between the disorder and standard sexual frustration

Anything that reduces sex drive is likely going to reduce motivation and drive in general.

A lot of attention is given to the male sex drive, but it's likely that men just have more drive, period. It's what's at the root of risk taking behaviors and things like that (as well as creativity, building things, and literally doing anything productive at all).

Something like a TAAR1 receptor antagonist would be a good target for "sex addiction".

Which would be like the opposite of an amphetamine, which has basically the opposite effect on sex drive, including in women (the fun fact here is we already have an extremely effective "female viagra", it's just not a good medicine for something as "minor" as "I can't get wet" because of all the side effects and the addiction potential).

Come to think of it, such a medication might actually have quite a few uses, especially around addiction (although ΔFosB would be a more direct target). I wonder if there's ever been any research done on that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TAAR1

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FOSB

But yeah the point is we'd likely be looking at things that reduce drive in general and that would have a lot of side effects beyond a decrease in libido.

From an evolutionary perspective the strategy for a man to pass on his genes is to have sex with as many women as he can. Women on the other hand have the incentive to find a man that will commit to her, help her through pregnancy and the child rearing years.

Marriage and monogamy is essentially taking the woman’s side. We are asking men to not act on the urges that have been designed to benefit them. We should realize that the whole idea of monogamy, sex addiction, etc. come from a standard of what’s best for women, not what’s best for men. There is nothing inherently wrong with having a sex drive. We all exist because of sex. The continuation of the human race depends on sex. The idea men should be monogamous and not desire much sex is driven by what best suits women.

Obviously, men shouldn’t satisfy their sex drive by forcing women to have sex, but nobody should have to apologize for having a sex drive, not even a string one.

I think this is a bit too simplified.Having casual sex with a lot of women is a good mating strategy for men, because men have very low reproductive cost compared to women, but being in a long-term monogamous relationship is also a good mating strategy for men because it comes with certain benefits. Some of the major benefits are ensuring paternal certainty, and being able to get with a more attractive partner. So men are wired to have a strong desire for both.Women are wired to prefer long-term relationships over casual sex, because they have much higher reproductive cost, but women don't really have as much of a problem having casual having sex with very physically attractive men even if they don't show signs of commitment, because there genes make the trade off worth it.

[–]UnconventionalXY 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Being in a long term monogamous relationship may have been a good mating strategy in the past when access to sex was not conditional, but today men's access to sex is completely controlled by what a woman wants, not the man, and he is locked into a resources contract he can't break, but she isn't. There are penalties for men in modern relationships, not benefits.

Conversely, a man spreading his seed widely is still able to get access to sex by leveraging his attractiveness and relying on women testing the waters. I don't expect this to last much longer with women babytrapping men and enforcing a contract he didn't sign or otherwise punishing men for not committing, by accusing them of rape in order to create a change of behaviour in womens favour. Being single will soon not be any more attractive an option than a relationship for men and neither will have any real benefit for men only women.

I think it will require both men and women being rational for the sake of civilisation to avert catastrophe: recognising the basis of biology in everything we do, but using reason to chart a path to a win-win cooperative solution rather than a selfish win-lose (or increasingly likely an ultimate lose-lose outcome).

Women should have choice, but it needs to include reason, consequence and a wider responsibility to more than just oneself and not blindly following emotion.

Men should have a choice over sexual expression and not have it limited to only what women want for themselves, in a way that does not coerce women for more than they wish to give; and also an ability to express their innate masculinity without it being suppressed in women's favour.

Minimising women's fear seems to be a current drive, but although fear was a useful primitive emotion to help preserve life, it can easily become paranoia if it is not limited by reason and rationality, which is what is also currently happening.

It's interesting to consider that women complain they fear to walk alone at night because they could be sexually assaulted, however, if they had a male partner committed to a relationship walking with them, they would be far less likely to be assaulted because such a partner is usually also committed to protecting his access to sex. It would actually be in womens interest to attract a partner who can provide security and the resources they need for child raising whilst keeping that dick pointed in her direction. The issue is that the mans desire for sex often exceeds that of his partner, so the best solution is to allow him to seek surplus sexual needs outside the relationship without penalty whilst preserving the relationship if that is an issue.

[–]UnconventionalXY 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Who determined what level of sex drive is an addiction, compared to simple diversity in complex systems?

A man having a higher sex drive than his female partner does not make him a sex addict.
