My old man didn't really give me all that much wisdom before the divorce, but there's one thing he's said which has always stuck by me, and which has never been proven wrong:

Always trust your gut.

He had a long, interesting, and boring story about saving his company $1 million when a buyer made his gut twist queer... but that's beside the point.

This bloke felt something deep in his gut - something was wrong. She loved the appearance of things, tried to fix it, he decided that having values above "what people think about me" was pathological. He apologized for doing what was right. He apologized for trusting his gut.

Always trust your gut. Second guess it - seek outside opinions - but listen to it.

And never apologize. Once in a blue moon your gut might set you wrong... actually, scratch that. I've paid some heavy tolls in my time, but it was never because my gut set me wrong.

I once broke up with a woman whom I loved so much that I almost threw up when I did the deed - but it was the right thing to do. I've done some pretty cool stuff in my life, but breaking up with her was the hardest - and it's also my proudest moment.
