Hi. Your Hymen can get ruptured but it can’t “take” your virginity. It may tear, split etc. Depends on the person. Nothing can “take” your virginity especially not an object or device. You’re simply no longer a virgin after you have intercourse.

Your hymen may not be intact already. It can be torn from certain trauma/injuries to the area, using tampons, exercise/playing sports, and it can also naturally thin over time through activities. Playing sports and riding a bike as a child can put pressure on your groin area, which in turn can stretch the hymen and make the membrane thinner.

As for the procedure itself, it is invasive and can be painful.

Oh honey. As others have said, hymen doesn't indicate virginity. Riding horses and doing gymnastics can rupture it. Also, it already has holes in it: how do you think your period blood gets out?

I was also a virgin when I had my first pap. I was a virgin on my wedding night. I found it uncomfortable, but I was also not relaxed. Which plays a big role in how this goes. Not fair, because, it would be hard to relax with your feet in the stirrup regardless. Fair warning (because I always manage to forget): some light spotting after is normal (so is not spotting).

Talk to your doctor. A good doctor will have no problem explaining everything to you and should want you to feel comfortable and confident before performing any procedure, let alone one involving your vagina and vulva. And if they don't: you shouldn't let then near you period (pardon the pun). Unrelated: I would strongly suggest getting used to using anatomical terms for body parts. Especially if you plan on having children. Using anatomical instead of euphemisms is one of the easiest ways to protect children from sexual predators.

Well, nowadays, hymen don't mean so much to most men, even religious ones, women find other ways to fornicate without breaking it, and even find their way to get surgery to get it back. So here's what you can tell yourself about it. I lost my hymen in my dancing and gymnastics years. Many girls lose their hymen by so many ways that isn't sex.

Then, about the exam. Your gynecologist will ask you if you're a virgin (now they formulate it saying if you're sexually active or not) and will proceed accordingly. The exam is just barely touching anything, it's just to see if everything is doing well, and it indeed does feel really weird to be touched here.

Have you ever heard of someone saying their lost their virginity to a medical device during a procedure, dildo, riding their bike or whatever? Even a medical professional cannot tell the difference between a virgin and non virgin.

The procedure will not take your “v-card”. They insert a lubricated metal device called a speculum to open your vagina. Then a thing kinda like a pipe cleaner is inserted to the end of your vagina. Your cervix is touched, the pipe cleaner thing is rubbed against your cervix to collect cells - this can feel uncomfortable but shouldn’t be painful. The entire procedure takes no more than 30 seconds. Sometimes the doctor may touch the outside of your vagina (vulva) with their gloved hands to check for any lumps or bumps- this also is very quick and completely painless.

You can let the doctor know you haven’t inserted anything into your vagina before and need the smallest speculum and lots of lubrication.

It sounds worse than it is. It’s a bit uncomfortable but it’s fast. Good on you for taking care of your feminine health!

Yes it will break your hymen. And yes it is that invasive. Certainly invasive enough to break your hymen. For me, it is always painful as they scrape against the cervix, and the speculum can be very large and uncomfortable to the point of pain.

Not sure why it's so hard for people to just admit that.

Whether intact hymen = v card is a totally separate question.

Your smear is vital. You can talk to your medical professional about these fears too. But being a virgin simply means having not had penetrative sex with a partner. It simply marks that first time, that's all.

And honestly, any man that would want you to skip a test that helps you not end up with a terminal illness is an idiot that doesnt deserve to be your first anyhow.

Unless your family has a history of cervical cancer why are you getting an exam if you've never been sexually active?
