It must be going around as my ex just asked me to pay a bit more for my share of extracurricular activities. Me: why?

Her: prices of everything is going up and I have to drive (son) to game and back.

Me: I bought you a Tesla that I paid cash for and you charge it in the house that I bought for you as part of the divorce settlement. Plus, I take him also to the same event, in my diesel truck.

Her: well, prices have gone up and it’s getting more expensive.

Me: hangs up.

This is one of those beautiful times when Family Law eats itself. Let me explain.

My major gripe about child support is that it's just a made-up number. Really. It's some fraction of your income. And even then, the judge can adjust it. Child support has NOTHING to do with the actual cost of supporting a child.

Sometimes child support advocates will lecture about how that money is meant for food, clothing, school supplies, and so on. I always agree and suggest that we add up the ACTUAL cost of those things, and I'll write a check for my half. What could be more fair or easy?

But, of course, that idea is rejected. The prevailing idea behind child support is that the amount should never, ever change, ever, under any circumstances. If a man is laid-off and needs two months to find a new job, too bad for him: The same payments must continue. If he gets sick, or arrested, or has a mental breakdown, the same payments must continue.

But what if mom's expenses go up? So, I stand by my original idea: I would actually be happy to pay more in support because fuel prices are going up -- so long as my entire payment is rooted in reality.

It's a two-way street. So, yeah, suck it up, honey; too bad you drive a gas-guzzler.

So, if you’re not making more money you have to pay more just because inflation? How is that even fair? Inflation is an issue for us too!
