No, you can be effectively jailed over not paying alimony as well. If the judge thinks you should be making more money, they'll impose a contempt of court order.

In my state (Florida) if you get behind in child support they first take away your driver's license. How does that make any sense if you want the father to keep his job and make money to support his kids? If you get too far behind they put you in jail. In theory, America does not have a debtors prison but they get around that on child support by charging you with contempt of court, arguing that you are not obeying a court order.

Oh man. Near and dear to my heart. All the independent women getting CS are all on welfare. I believe it’s title 4 but could be wrong. What’s even worse is the fact that THE STATE makes money off of your money. It’s not like your check goes to your child. No, the state takes it and launders it for a period of time and some sorry soul that paid 6 months after you paid for your child. I honestly think this is part of the reason that (depending on state) they side with the maternal parent in 78- ~90% of court cases. Gotta keep the status quo.

What’s even stupider is that the state will spend more Money to incarcerate a person and do more damage to the economy when that productive person is no longer productive

You can be jailed for other debts. If the court decides you can pay a debt, but you refuse to pay, you can be held in contempt and sentenced to jail.

Child support is the exception. If you can’t afford child support, you go to jail, whether you have the ability to pay or not.

Not only are you jailed, but you can lose your professional state licensing.

As someone who saw tons of father avoid child support almost continuously back in the 1970s, I have very little sympathy.

Added story. There was a case in the news recently (Portugal) where the father didn't pay for 22 years. BUT he went through all the legal proceedings with legal help to show that he couldn't pay literally anything. Salaries in Portugal are VERY low. And the incompetence came 100% from the court system that didn't bother processing the request in over 2 decades. And the woman wasn't suing the dad btw. She was suing the government. For 22 years of benefits or something like that.

Now comes the part more related to MRA and what pissed me off in the news. The title was worded as if the dad just wasn't paying. The literally said "mom sues after das hasn't paid alimony in 22 years". Now that's just ridiculous...
