What hopes and dreams do you have for your daughter?

of course. she is free to pursue happiness. she does not need to follow my path, nor would i EVER force her to.

It isn’t my place to decide what will or won’t make her happy. As a parent I can guide her but if she chooses a pathway different than what I would’ve, then so be it.

The one thing that I would impress upon her (or any of my children) is that actions will have consequences (good or bad) and part of growing up/adulthood is understanding that these choices will yield results that they must take accountability for that.

What do you mean by "support". At the point a child is choosing career or babies, they are no longer a child and it's out of a parents hands.

All anyone can do as a parent is try and equip their child with the skills they’ll need to be successful adults. Critical thinking, empathy, hard work - those are all things I’ll teach my daughter, but it’s not my job to make her choices for her. It’s my job to be there for her as a parent and a support system.

As long as what she’s doing doesn’t harm anyone, if it makes her happy, then so be it. I may not agree with every single thing she does, but it’s not my life - it’s hers.

I hope my daughter will have a stable future, ideally she would have both a family and a job as I have seen too many times that marriage is not a valid safety net. My Aunt went the stay at home without degree or job route and is now on social security after her husband left her and her three children.

I would absolutely support her, but I would also tell her the things that I was never told until I was way older. Like how after 30 your eggs start dying and the probability of birth defects increase.

I would support my daughter no matter what she decides to do, but I want her to know she has other options than just having a career.

My mom drilled into my head that if I didn't go to college then I would basically just become homeless and useless. I never ever even knew there was another option aside from getting a career. Having a family and getting married was never an option for me. Luckily I do have a family and I am married, and I never went to college. For years I bounced back between 5-10 different possible degrees I could get and I never seem satisfied. I couldn't convince myself to go into massive debt for something that might make me miserable in the end.

Both of my daughters get to decide exactly what they want to do with their lives, just as I did. My only hopes and dreams for them are that they are able to find what makes them happy, and pursue it to the best of their ability. If this means career, or living abroad, or a giant family, that is all up to them. They are individual human beings, with individual talents and weaknesses and preferences, not generic "daughters."

I would tell her that many people are happy with both as well as one or the other and none of my love toward her is contingent on her career or relationship or desire to provide grandchildren. She’s got to do what’s best for her because she is the one who will live her whole life with the consequences of her choices.

I'll go against the grain here, even though the post is kind of old. I have a 1 year old daughter.

I wouldn't "support" my daughter choosing a career over children. I'd be disappointed and concerned for her future. The biggest lie being sold to women right now is that a corporate job that doesn't care about you and would replace you in a week is going to bring you long term fulfillment. I'm watching many women in my age group (late 20s) becoming childfree and valuing their job over everything else.... I do not expect it to turn out well.

I would respect her decision and love her no matter what. I'd express my concern a couple of times and then let it go because it's her life and pushing back too hard would probably only backfire on me.

But support? No. I think she'd likely be making a mistake. I don't believe it's my job as a parent to support every life decision of my adult children.
