At my bookstore job today at work, when I was in the receiving area I overheard a conversation between two co-workers, both of whom are female, and they were talking about the Johnny Depp case. They were talking about how terrible a person Amber Heard is and how she's clearly abusive. I chimed in on the conversation, saying I agreed with them and even brought up how one positive of the case is how violence against men is being given more attention. And both agreed with me. I brought up how violence against men and the fact there's plenty of women who are violent against men is a massively overlooked and even ignored issue and both were in agreement with me.

It's great that this issue is getting so much attention. It's not to take away from violence against women at all which is also a very serious problem, but violence against men is equally serious and deserves the same attention as VAW and male victims deserve as much help and justice as female ones do. Violence, domestic abuse, rape, sexual harassment/assault, etc. happens to both men and women and is committed by both men and women, and yet much too often these issues are one-sided and ignore the bigger picture. My co-workers even agreed with me that society often turns a blind eye to the fact women are also abusers and terrible people, and that too often you get accused of being a misogynist for pointing it out even though that's not the intent at all. I have zero tolerance or respect for male and female perpetriators alike, and both deserve the same equally harsh punishments.

Not exactly something relevant or anything, but it was an interesting conversation at work that happened out of the blue and I thought I'd share it. It's excellent how progress is finally being made about much-needed attention and awareness for VAM, which again is a major upside to this case. I just hope Johnny truly gets the justice he deserves and Amber doesn't walk punishment-free.
