Depending on what country or state you are in, yes, investigations are very common in Divorce. Something like 80-90% of divorces now use evidence from social media. In terms of banks, usually the attorney can request to court to order the bank to turn over your statements. Credit cards also. All of this is common, to some degree or another, in every divorce in order to ensure that the parties are not hiding significant assets, wasting marital assets, or income. Failing to comply with valid discovery requests will only beget more discovery requests. Thinking that you're smarter than her lawyer and you can hide major things is usually a big mistake.

Sanctions for failing to comply with discovery requests or making incomplete/false statements to the court can range from payment of her attorneys fees, through unequal distribution of declared assets to account for "hidden assets" whether or not they exist, up to perjury and contempt of court, albeit more rarely.

Crazy thing is: they already have them because they were necessary to proceed with the divorce to begin with. Sigh …

Discovery. It was mostly financial. I had to produce 3 years of all bank statements, credit card statements, stocks, crypto assets, etc. Basically anything they could try to leech out of me. Opposition had to submit same. Of course we had to file motions to get same out of her.

My ex and I both used social media posts. It was standard fair that we had to discover all financials.

My ex did not use a PI but she did hire a second law firm that specialized in the disclosure of public records. I am a state employee and have a need to use my personal cell phone in the course of my work. They put in a public records request for the state university that is my employer. Right on the request they made the allegation that I am homophobic knowing my direct manager is a lesbian....this was a nice touch.

In that request for records release they requested my personnel file and my personal phone so that they could get any and all electronic communication contained therein pertaining to my work. Luckily I didn't physically have to give up my phone but it did take me a couple days to get everything off the phone to the universities public records office. They redacted it and sent it on to this law firm.

My ex was friends with this lawyer and he worked out at the same gym I do. She would have him come to the house to try and intimidate me. He would threaten me with legal action (verbally) and I would come back with how would the bar like to know your trespassing.

Ultimately they gained nothing from this it cemented the fact that there was nothing negative to use against me. But they timed it to coincide with interrogatories and requests for production. I think it was meant to try and keep me from meeting the interrogatories and RFP deadline so they could file a motion for contempt for not meeting that deadline. I met the deadline all 9,000 pages were delivered via handtruck about 4:30 p.m. on the last day.
