This article tries to “scientifically” explain why some Americans aren’t mad about Griner’s arrest and/or don’t feel she’s wrongfully detained. The article mentions sexism against women, racism, discrimination against gays and even poverty as an excuse (as if she was living in poverty).

Nowhere does the article address that perhaps some people might think she deserves to be detained because she was caught red handed illegally bringing drugs into a country. Nowhere does the article mention the U.S. wouldn’t be fighting to get her back if it had been a non celebrity white guy.

The article seems to be based on the assumption that as a black woman and celebrity she should be exempt from the rule of law. At it’s heart, I felt the author was upset that a woman wasn’t getting a free pass.

(Sure, there’s a political element to her arrest, but that doesn’t change the fact she illegally brought drugs into the country, a fact many seem to think should be irrelevant since she’s a woman.)
