I was going through the catalog of my audiobook service and stumbled on I Hate Men by Pauline Harmange. I listened to the book about a year ago but remember little. She was serious, though, that I remember thinking. She hated men in many and various ways. An appalling book - that must have made a lot of money for the disgusting author. The book has been translated into more than 17 languages.
So, I decided to check out what the mainstream and the part of the public that has ranked it thought. Did they think that hating men is a good or bad thing?
Let's start with Goodreads. The book has received quite average 3.8 stars, "not bad but not superb either". The most upvoted reviews tend to be in the category
Short and to the point. Men suck.
as one reviewer wrote.
If we trust another reviewer, New York Time's take (behind a pay wall) was:
I read an article about this book in the New York Times that basically boiled down to "a lady said a true thing and dude-bros got offended."
On Amazon the book has received 4.5 stars. For 74% it was a five-star book. But the most popular review's title is
"HILARIOUS: Overprivileged white European woman thinks that she is oppressed! Lol".
Amazon has listed several quotes from reviews by the mainstream media:
A good book, written from a burning heart but with a cool head - The Times
Rousing … a call to liberation. Her writing is full of hope, unwavering in its trust of other women and their abilities - Independent
An exhilarating essay to be read in one sitting - Libération
Written in wise prose, devoid of excess or rage, I Hate Men explores the terrain of contemporary feminism, its arguments in keeping with those of writers like Rebecca Solnit, as well as the movement's key ideas: patriarchy, the mental load, #MeToo and solidarity - L’Obs
Let's google for other media.
The Guardian, perhaps the most crazy-feminist big newspaper there is, has no review. But they published an interview that was neutral if not positive. Certainly not critical in any way.
Evening Standard is on the first page of Google search. Its review is very negative:
I Hate Men is a risible, solipsistic cri de Coeur that only a naive young woman could have written.
Let's move further down the Google search page.
Mail Online has a harshly critical assessment.
Metro has a very positive interview.
German n-tv has a positive review. Feminist should not be so gentle with their criticism of men!
Okay, I'll stop here. The big media haven't apparently written many reviews of the book if Google is to be believed. Not in English or other Germanic languages either. I'm sure there would be a lot of reviews in French and that's why I'll leave them alone in this post that already got too long.
As so often, if we replaced "men" by any other group of people, this book would have been banned, not just threatened. And if that book somehow had survived, everyone would have condemned it. The author would not have been interviewed by empathic journalist but drowned to the deepest abyss in the ocean, symbolically, at least.
But what can you say about men without causing an uproar? Almost anything.
Men, the privileged ass holes! God, it feels good to hate them.
