Unprovoked 'one punch' attacks are now subject to harsh penalties in Australia unless the perpetrator is a woman in which case she gets off with a small fine as usual.

From the article:

"The following book titles are all aimed at female readers and were collected from a cursory glance at Amazon. This sample is nowhere near the entirety of those available in this, er, genre – but they are sufficient to paint a picture of how millions of women around the world apparently view relationships with men as experiments in animal behaviorism and manipulation strategies, with the aim of controlling men."

[–]Harsimaja 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not that this changes the point much, but it's odd to see that of the 16 titles shown, at least 6 are written by men (and 2 aren't clear). No less disturbing, but I suppose they know how to cater to an audience...

Cucked.

I think that this, partially, comes from all the ideas surrounding women in our culture as the "fairer sex" and not to mention the "women are wonderful effect" where people tend to attribute a lot of positive attributes to women simply for existing as a woman.

Men tend to be stereotyped as inherently trouble making (mostly as teenagers and young adults) and inherently boorish. You can see this most often in comedies/ sitcoms. So the woman has to be the one to reign them in/ civilize them.

[–]MadKhantheTerrible 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

It ain't just that. It's not just controlling men to fall into their (women's) perception of 'good behaviour', I think this is only a single aspect under an overarching umbrella. Most of us know here that women are very socially oriented, that's why fields such as psychology are very female dominated. It's simply a matter of them getting off on having a guy wrapped around their finger, and as superficial as it makes them look it's true. For example, I knew someone who would purposefully start a fight with her partner just because she liked the makeup/hate sex. She literally got off on what she perceived to be her controlling him in some way. Unfortunately this isn't unheard of at all. But what I found interesting about this situation is that she was a decent person in other aspects of life. She was a schoolteacher and was otherwise quite ethically careful. It's strange. It was either she was ethically oblivious to what she was doing or she was purposefully ethically ignorant because the reward was maybe too enticing. Or maybe simply, as cynical as it sound, there aren't as much social repercussions which have a massive influence on the behaviour of even 'good people'.

Furthermore in this particular context, that's why I believe women sometimes don't like to communicate what they actually want from their partners (in my example, rough sex); and how they are scared/nervous ISN'T the only reason. It's like a game, kind of like how some men find more enjoyment in the pursuit of women; the game is more entertaining than the end result.

Men are as dogs? This means: clever, friendly, loyal, beautiful, kind-hearted, fluffy, strong, funny, joyful and cute?

Well, why not :))

Yes, in the same way that calling someone a pussy is a compliment.

They are strong, flexible, can make life and take a pounding.

Source, some comedian.

Wow that’s crazy. Hate speech all of it.

Put any other demographic in there, and the books would be banned.

Notice they’re all white too.

As a black man, they need more black and brown representation.

[–]psilorder 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, as far as i know, one of the requirements when you train your dog is "clear, consistent behavior of the type that your dog understands".

Which might not be a bad thing to apply to relationships.

Not that i think that's the point of those books.

My (single) mother said that men are like dogs: feed them, do not bother them so they would be angry, and let them out for a night. Actual quote.

You just know..

[–]Dacammel 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

I’m curious how many books in a similar vein are aimed at men.

Aka how many shitty books are written for men that demean their female partners.

This isn’t a one sided issue, referring to your S/O as “the old ball and chain” has been a common joke in male groups for a long time.

Again not pointing that out to say that this isn’t an issue, but to provide a perhaps less outrage inducing prospective, that is to say, we all suck.

[–]Mahameghabahanacentrist male advocate 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Both are problematic and be called out, wouldn't you agree?

[–]Dacammel -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes that was my whole point in the last paragraph

[–]ActualInteraction0 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I did a brief search, couldn't find any books that refer to women negatively, at least not in a vein similar to calling men dogs. Many about pleasing women though.

[–]LOCKJAWVENOM 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean, there are plenty of misogynist books that refer to women negatively, it's just that they get banned online for being sexist. It's only the misandrist ones that refer to men negatively that get the blind eye. But I guess I'm really just stating the obvious, here.

[–]Dacammel -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I did a quick search for the same book titles but with gender swaps, and I found several matches, perhaps not as widespread as the female ones. maybe a better comparison would be youtube videos, most men I know don’t like to read, and the ones who do are usually smart enough to not read dogshit books like that.

[–]Blauwpetje 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Even if people would like to write and read those books, it would be impossible. They wouldn’t go unnoticed and would cause a big scandal.

[–]Clemicus 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

I’m curious how many books in a similar vein are aimed at men

Found two so far but I'd have to go beyond the title. There's a third but the title is insulting to both. The dimensions of the book look similar to Gilbert or Garfield so assuming comic strips

If we're going with the inverse of dog there's two books I know of and a third I just found. All three are aimed at women

Edit: Think this is all I could find. Found a general advice book for women by Elizabeth Hilts

[–]Dacammel 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I realized that men don’t really read books like that, perhaps a better comparison would be to look at yt videos, or podcasts.

[–]Clemicus 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

The problem would be any reaction to them and they couldn't be openly talked about even to other men

Can't say I've looked into other media (YouTube or podcasts). The ones I've noticed don't refer to women in a derogatory terms

The oddest thing I noticed most of these 'advice books' are short. I mean like below 100 pages short

I've updated the previous comment with the books I found

[–]Dacammel 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I mean have you seen Andrew Tate? He’s the first that comes to mind, but I can say I’ve seen a fair share of podcast clips of men just saying awful shit about women under the pretense of being players or whatever.

My whole point of this ultimately was not to defend the female advice books, but just to point out that we are just as guilty of this, and should be careful to not make this into a circlejerk.

[–]Clemicus 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I mean have you seen Andrew Tate?

No, haven't watched anything by him. Sometimes I pretend he doesn't exist

The only videos I do recall were gotcha ones. There was a video of some fps playing in the background, in the forefront a video of someone speaking to so called feminists and a narrator calling the women manatees

My whole point of this ultimately was not to defend the female advice books, but just to point out that we are just as guilty of this, and should be careful to not make this into a circlejerk

Yeah, I get the point. There's a ton of bad advice books out there. The vast majority of these don't seem to have many ratings or reviews online

The more annoying aspect, for me personally, would be anyone who read them and what they learnt from them. But that would most likely be someone who has a bad personality instead of someone who was influenced by the material

[–]Dacammel 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I thought Tate was like ironic at first, and I still think a lot of the shit he said was ironic/sarcastic but the problem was his audience (teen boys) weren’t smart enough to realize it,

Basically the same as what you said about people who actually read those books and take advice.

[–]Clemicus 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I thought Tate was like ironic at first, and I still think a lot of the shit he said was ironic/sarcastic but the problem was his audience (teen boys) weren’t smart enough to realize it

I'm not sure if there's anything to that claim -- about the age of his audience -- as I haven't seen any data on his viewing audience

If you're going by the press, it was like an existential threat that was following on from some articles about boys misbehaving in school (things they do and say). Read some accounts by teachers stating things must change

Edit: I agree, I originally thought it was sarcasm when I read articles

[–]Dacammel 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I realize it’s anecdotal, but as someone who spends a lot of time on TikTok, pretty much the only group that vocally supported him was teen/YA men.

Overall i think at the end of the day it doesn’t matter if he meant it or not, the message is still the same, and I think it was a perfect example of harmful masculinity.

[–]International_Crew89 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

It feels to me like a lot of this is a culmination of socio-gender dynamics (including social amplification of pyscho-socio-sexual instincts) resulting in the general sense that women are the default human resulting from a fetus not affected by the Y chromosome (resulting in biological male), and therefore men are somehow, the "other". This carries forth for understandings of behaviour. So 'women are people acting reasonably, while men are dogs, driven by "lesser" instincts'
