“The dearth of American males attending college has generated a lot of discussion. But little has been said about another crisis among young males — their struggles to remain buoyant, let alone succeed, once they’re in college.”

Yep. He acknowledges the problem, yet he himself is guilty of failing to really address the documented and purposeful decision to focus on girls in education which clearly has been to the detriment of males.

A decade ago, I read books by Dr Hoff-Sommers and Peg Tyre which documented the purposeful discrimination against boys in education and the inevitable outcome. It’s great to see more authors acknowledge this is an issue, but sad to see most all are afraid to address the purposeful discrimination against males at the heart of the issue.

My message to all such authors: Thanks for acknowledging the issue, but seriously, grow a fucking spine and address the blatant, purposeful discrimination against males in education. If you fail to do so, you are part of the problem, not part of the solution. I know no author wants to face the rath of feminism, but we can’t make any progress until we address the actual cause of the problem. Stop being so damn wimpy and address the documented discrimination against males in education.

The problem is that the public focuses on the outcomes of men that come from upper-middle and upper-class backgrounds, not the average man.

On average, younger men are lost and there is no program in place or safety net to help them gain employment in careers to be excited about

This is all part of a plan. They started pushing girls in grade school ahead of boys 50 years ago hoping this future would happen. Of course they don't want to address this problem. It's not a problem to them, it's equity, it is their goal.

Facilitate their sexual fulfilment that doesn't result in a fear of false accusations and being held hostage to womens wants and feelings: provide an avenue for personal development and a life beyond education that also isn't held hostage to womens feelings and what women want.

I expect many young men are getting depressed over the miserable lives their elders are experiencing because men are viewed as disposable assets for the benefit of others with no self-actualisation for themselves. Even education is in service of society rather than in service of themselves and society.

Society has to face the dilemma of biological procreation realities versus the right to choose a life for oneself that does not negatively impact on the right of someone else to do the same.

The men to which this professor refers are either long dead or no longer socially relevant today. So the young men living today have to pay a price for perceived historical injustices? It’s sentiments like this that do a huge disservice to young men today.

good to see the topic getting some more attention. Even though the author is sadly timid in his analysis. Blaming college men for the systemic discrimination they're subjected to.

The following point gave me pause:

It’s a question that needs to be addressed if schools want to not just keep male students enrolled but actually help them. And they need help: Recent research conducted by the American College Health Association found that, among other things, nearly half of male college students surveyed felt that “things were hopeless”. About 56% felt “very lonely,” 59% often felt sad and nearly 35% experienced depression that made it difficult to function. Nearly 50% experienced overwhelming anxiety. Forty-three percent of them confessed that academics was the most “traumatic” and “difficult” thing for them to navigate.

These numbers are genuinely mind boggeling. Does anyone have a link to the referenced study? If this is even remotely acurate, the climate on campus must be a lot worse than I estimated.

A 2017 small-sample study brought to light another problem universities need to address: Males who embrace a traditional masculine identity have lower GPAs and can resort to “behaviors that preserve their masculine image, such as social isolation and substance abuse, instead of asking for help.” This is crucial: The male students in this study feared appearing “weak” by seeking help, which further eroded their “resilience” to bounce back from academic struggles.

Hm, small sample size study finding a result that perfectly aligns with feminist dogma. My spider sense is tingeling
