I'm 25 F not getting married or having children. Dating is ok because I can bounce when I want. I like my disposable income, hobbies, clean house and peace and quiet. I see my friends who are married with kids and they seem to have become more miserable because of it. Also unmarried childless women are the happiest demographic.

I'd be curious to know how much of this is "frictional" single-ness.

Suppose an extreme ficticious society where the population operates on a cycle - "date for 6 months, single for 6 months". Assuming the cycles start dates are independent from one another, when taking a random sample of the population you'd expect about 50% of the population to be single at any one time.

Also, if you read the study, the rates were 41% in 2018. So 45% in 2030 isn't exactly a massive leap. I think comments here are reacting as though it's going up from 10% to 45% of something. Also, for what it's worth, the study actually only mentions that 45% of working women will be single by 2030, not 45% of all women.

The small rise to "45% of working women being single" might just be because they're more likely to be in between relationships than before, and "settling down" is happening much later. Therefore more women in the 25-44 age bracket are likely to be in that "frictional" stage.

And 41% were "single" in 2018 according to the study. The Census considers you single if you don't live with your spouse/partner, so anyone who is just dating/engaged/separated and not living together is considered single.

If the average woman who moves in with her partner is a year older in 2030 than in 2018, that would more than account for a 41% to 45% shift among women 25-44. That sort of feels like a nonevent.
