If I may, I'd like to rephrase your bullet points. I'm on mobile though, so the formatting will be bad. Apologies.

• The filter removes blemishes, enhances features via makeup visuals, bleaches the skin, and alters the overall structure of the face.

• The filter adjusts seemingly perfectly to movement and won't show up on objects that block parts of the face. This makes it so that it is difficult to detect the presence of this filter.

• Because it changes bone structure and skin tone, this filter shows a variation of unachievable beauty to whoever decides to use it.

• Gazing at one's face with the filter and then removing it creates cognitive dissonance. The eyes adjust to perfection, normalizing it. When the filter gets removed, the brain instinctively has a negative response to the drop in attraction before adjusting and recognizing it as reality again. This negative response gets stored in the subconscious, and if done repeatedly, will get conditioned to the visuals regardless of setting.

I doubt the discomfort stems from the uncanny valley. If anything, the fact that it does not look uncanny makes it so shocking. It looks real. It shows a prettier version that can never happen, but it COULD have been. This is mostly a subconscious process.

Thinking about it, it could actually be addictive. Like with food or porn, a ton of hormones are released in the pleasure center of the brain. Once the sparkles wear off, the dip that follows sucks and makes the user yearn for a new fix.

I can already imagine a Boomer caricature of Narcissus as a teenage girl, staring at her reflection through filtered water.

I can see why it's bad for people, honestly.
