As a father in the UK this saddens me and it embarrases me that men overseas see this, but it doesn't surprise me at all.

The only unusual thing about this case is how long the father continued fighting. Everything else about it is perfectly normal and adheres to official policy.

I've seen numerous men go through this including my own brother, who endured years of seeing his alcoholic, drug addicted criminal ex neglecting and ignoring their son, so badly that the authorities put the boy on the at risk register and were going to take him into government care.

When my brother demanded to know why he couldn't take custody instead of his son being taken away, he was met with blank incomprehension: of course he couldn't, they said, he was only the child's father. Those were their actual words. They weren't malicious or incompetent, that's the official policy.

This is all too often the case. It happened to me as a child. When my mother went to court for full custody of me, I saw a few psychologists, and I told them what she had told me to say. Well, by that I mean she fogged my child mind sufficiently that I parroted the salient points. At the time I thought I was doing what I should do.

I am glad that the psychiatrist mentioned in the article is well enough trained to recognise this when it happens.

Word of warning for some of the overseas readers unaware of the paper's methods: take anything written in the Daily Mail with a pinch of salt. Although I'm not doubting the story's validity, it will include tons of hyperbole and sensationalism, written to incite widespread fear and hatred.
