Very interesting ideas. Could you write up some of the maths you did to show what effect smoking has on male and female life expectancies? Or explain how you did it?

Yes, it is true that a male fetus has a greater chance of miscarriage or stillbirth. The "why" behind this isn't that males are weaker. It is that the mother's immune system can react in a hostile manner to the male fetus due to the differing biological makeup. The male fetus is essentially treated like a parasite or a rejected organ transplant.

I'll go out on a limb and assume that she didn't use our "weakness" to support the idea that society should look after men better than it looks after women.

A couple of centuries ago, when women had something to really complain about, male intellectuals would state that since women are intellectually inferior they shouldn't be sent to school. Mary Wollstonecraft retorted by saying that women being "intellectually inferior" is actually a bloody good reason as to why they should be sent to school -- they need it more! Wouldn't it be nice if contemporary feminists used the same reasoning and declared that since men are "weaker" and are doing worse than women in most areas these are bloody good reasons to give them extra assistance? After all, we need it more...

This is another person trying to get the evidence to fit their ideology, while already having the conclusion(men are weak) before they gather evidence.

Would she also conclude that the men and women in third world countries, that have a shorter life span, are weak?

It also seems like anyone who thinks that they need to put down another sex/group, has some insecurity and self value problems.

I like this piece, but I also feel it's overly simplistic (said the sociologist to the mathematician, haha). For example, men tend to deal with more stress, but are less likely to recognize it (similar to depression, and why studies which rely on self-reporting are useless), and more likely to self-medicate (due to the absence of emotional support structures); drinking and smoking are the most common ways of self-medicating related to stress, so calling men "risk takers" in relation to those is somewhat disingenuous.

I suppose if one classifies "high stress" as risk, which is fair, then that risk would be the cause of drinking and smoking, and thus their effects on life expectancy; however, since that risk is often the result of gender expectation, rather than personal choice, we still can't simply say men are risk takers.

I mean, was a man faced with the choice between conscription and execution, choosing conscription, a risk taker, or was risk forced upon him?

I understand that you're debunking the assumption that men are biologically weaker, and I actually agree with your assertion that men are more likely to be risk takers, but there's a lot more at play than choice.

The risk of death at all ages for men is higher than for females. Read that again ... at all ages. That includes 0 through 5, when risky behavior is not exactly an issue of tremendous importance. Later on in life, risky behavior is certainly an issue, but there is actually a biological difference. Dr. Kass is actually correct.

You may be a mathematician, but I'm a demographer and epidemiologist.
