If there truly was an over lording patriarchy, why does feminism exist? Why do women have jobs outside the home? Why aren't they simply broodmares? Why are there laws protecting women?

The majority of the responses and top comments seem to be quite reasonable and seem to hold a solid perspective on the phenomenon. I don't think this would have been the case 6 months to a year ago.

Of course there is a patriarchy, just not in the hilarious, feminist sense of the word that adds up to men having all the power -- except when women want to feel good about themselves, then it's a case of "I am woman here me roar". There is also a matriarchy, of course, and both daddy and mommy are getting the crap kicked out of them by the plutocrats.

Too simplistic. Plutocracy, racism, patriarchy, matriarchy, all these elements, and probably a few more, explain the way things are.
