I'm troubled by her not handing over the two year old daughter, but I think that she should have full time custody of the baby for at least six months while she breastfeeds. It's a baby, babies need to eat, and breast milk is the best thing for babies.

I can't disagree with the exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months thing. It's recommended by a host of medical professionals for good reason. But there's no harm in bottle feeding with formula for 2 days a week so he can be with his father and actually form a bond with him.

Christ, my mother gave up on breastfeeding me after 3 months. I'm fine. So are thousands of others who weren't exclusively breastfed.

I love how bonding with the mother is a priority but when a court respects the need for the baby to form a bond with his father folk are spinning out over the horror of it all.

The breastfeeding argument is routinely used in custody cases by mothers to interfere with fathers access to their children.

i.e. The baby/child needs to be breastfed every few hours, and I (the mother) refuse to allow contact to occur in my home, and [insert excuse about how using a breast pump is not practical], therefore it is not practical to allow the father to have contact at this time.

Many mothers claim to be exclusively breastfeeding when they aren't, to deliberately interfere with fathers access to the child.

Personally I think that if it's acceptable to send a father to jail for not paying child support, it should be equally acceptable to jail a mother who refuses to supply breastmilk for her child while in the fathers custody.

Uh, she's got a legit point. A court order that separates a nursing infant from his/her mother is a fucking stupid court order. Taking the baby away for two days at a stretch is going to mess with her milk supply.

This is more like an infant's rights and parenting rights issue. The mother is in the right. Though the father should be aloud to visit and be in the presence of the mother as long as the child needs to be breastfed.

Regardless that she is breastfeeding, he should have the opportunity to bond with his infant child as well.

Since they are unable to come to some form of agreement where they can be in the same location he should be able to have intermittent access to his infant regardless.

She should still be the primary milk producer, but he should still be able to bond with his child. Removing paternal investment in the child will remove incentives for him to overproduce and generate income for her. Where he can go knock up some other woman who will let him have access to his children.

I don't want the father of my child (whom I still hold financially responsible for said child) to actually have access (read: to be an influence in said child's life and to partake in the joys of actual parenthood) to my child for reasons.

Translation: I want full control and I want to use my child as a weapon against my ex. Not because my ex is a bad person or a bad parent, but simply because I have a grudge against them or I'm just a heartless, unthinking, selfish asshole.

God, I hate people like this. So many children out there with NO parents at all, and these selfish cretins (anyone who'd use a child as a weapon like this, I mean) stop their OWN children from having a fuller experience of their childhood. It's just sick.

My mom raised me for the first 9 years of my life; my dad was, more or less, absent. She left the hospital ALONE, with just me, NO help from anyone else. What did she do? Did the mature thing: raised me. And when my father finally came around, she didn't use me against him, she didn't talk down about him to me (she felt this would hurt me and my development; she was right), she allowed him to have a role in my life.

My mother is an amazing person and serves as an example of good, honest parenthood. If you're a parent and you love your children, then you would never use them like that. Ever.
