My dad worked with a man that adopted his wife's child from a previous relationship, raised her as his own, pretty stand up. The daughter grew up and out of wedlock gave birth to twins, she eventually couldn't care for them; her mother and adoptive father said they would take the twins and raise them. The couple ended up getting divorced, guess who is paying child support on twins? He had to put off retiring because he couldn't afford it.

This is a double edged sword. It is unfair that he is paying child support for a child that is not his. However, it would be just as unfair if after raising a child he thought was his son for three years, his Ex could just get a paternity test and completely cut him out of the child's life. The law hurts men in this situation but it also protects them and the family relationship they have established.
