Seconding this as a guy in Canberra. You're not alone.

For the first two I asked if they were open to prospect of a non-drinking, non-smoking, no-pets, good-with-gardening guy, and they simply said no. I asked why and never got a response back. Both emails were like this. It really discourages me from trying...

Meanwhile my parents want me out of their house so they can downsize and move interstate to their investment property...

Yes, i also have seen a lot of this in Sydney. And no, i don't know what you can do about it. Wear a dress and claim to identify as a woman, i suppose.

As an IT-technician who works for an ISP in my country, I have been to lot of male and female households. Women are by no means tidier or cleaner than men, it's pretty equal.

I guess it's obvious what the over reaction would be like if you put an ad in the Looking For Accomodation section saying you'd "be happy to live with anyone of any colour or any gender or any age as long as they aren't feminist". Goes without saying.

I know this is no consolation but this practice is rife in Sydney (esp. inner suburbs, North Shore, Northern Beaches, The Shi(t)re) - I should know. Same applies in Wollongong and CBR and I doubt it's any better in Melbourne or Brisvegas.

Can you get a share thing going? Any mates at work who could help? Other than that, try Parramatta or the like (somewhere close to frequent trains).

Historically, Australia’s social structure contributed to significant differences in opportunity and outcome between the genders, resulting in prejudice and discrimination against more women than men over time. With the increase in women’s rights over the past one hundred and fifty years, Australia was shown to be a world precedent when it became the second country to give women the vote in 1902. As the socially constructed roles of males and females began to change, women found themselves gaining more leverage in areas such as family, education, and work. However, there are still elements of gender inequality prevalent in contemporary Australian society, despite setting a precedent to the rest of the world in terms of voting rights. The nature of Australian society is intrinsically built to have systematic gender-based discrimination within it, which gives rise to biased attitudes within many fields. Within this essay, the Sex Discrimination Act will be used as a basis to analyze and evaluate the relative gender equality within the realms of sexual harassment, the Australian labor force and Australian politics. It is imperative to note, however, that gender equality and inequality within the country are not exclusive to or limited to, these fields.

The Sex Discrimination Act of 1984 went some way towards increasing gender equality in Australia. The Act prohibits the discrimination on the basis of sex, marital status, pregnancy or potential pregnancy in a variety of areas within Australian public life. Areas which are covered by the act include work, accommodation, education, the provision of goods, facilities and services, the activities of clubs and the administration of any Commonwealth laws and programmes. Amongst a variety of other things, the Sex Discrimination Act seeks to eliminate discrimination involving the dismissal of employees with familial responsibilities and to eliminate cases of sexual harassment in areas of public activity (Australian government, 2010). This Act embodies the principle of recognition and acceptance within the Australian community of the equality between the two different genders. In June 2010, the government introduced the Sex Discrimination Amendment Bill 2010 to amend the Sex Discrimination Act to, amongst other things, extend the protection from discrimination on the grounds of family responsibilities to both women and men in all areas of work, and to provide greater protection from sexual harassment for students and workers. There has been significant progress in reducing direct sex discrimination since 1984, when the Sex Discrimination Act was passed by the Australian Parliament. However, the application of the Act over a quarter of a century has highlighted some serious limitations with its current form and content. It is clear that progress on achieving substantive gender equality in Australia has stalled, and the Sex Discrimination Act is currently limited in its ability to proactively address this problem.

Is the landlord renting out a room in their house? If so, I think it's perfectly fine to discriminate. Many people would prefer to live with someone of the same sex.

Anyone who has worked Janitorial Services can tell you this is outright lie. Women's Public Washrooms are far more often than not worse than the men's.

About 80-90% of the ads were like this. What's a male to do?

Stop Identifying as Male. Tell them you are female and if they call you out on it...do the feminist thing and sue them for discrimination.

Check the laws.

Maybe you can send them a letter (through a lawyer) to get some money out of it. Turn it into a business ;-)

I've noticed very similar patterns on AirBnB (several countries). Similar patterns are experienced by blacks btw (not just on AirBnB).
