At least by the end of the article she acknowledge her behavior for what it was. That's a bonus, but only if people read to the end.

She still pretends that her selfishness hasn't irrevocably harmed her children, her husband and herself though. She has glanced in the mirror but not looked deeply enough to see what she has truly done.

No, she doesn't recognize the abuse. Emotionally abusing your partner isn't being their manager instead of their partner. It's being an abusive piece of shit.

In my relationships my partners, all women, were bad partners. The wife in a couple we were close with commented that women in her experience from the 'younger' generation (younger baby boomers) were very selfish. I, unfortunately, thought I'd found a unicorn a few years ago. She ended up nearly destroying my life.

My exact words to my ex-wife:

You say you listen, but you use that term differently than other people use it. For you, it means your aural sensors received input, and as long as that input is there, you feel you've done your half role in the communication. That's not listening. Listening is taking in information, parsing it, analyzing it, and fitting it in. You ask for my opinion every time, but you never actually consider it, and you certainly never take my advice. I'm not a partner, and never have been. I'm a placeholder so you can pretend you have a partner.

Wow, for the last 2 years or so, that has been my marriage. I give a suggestion and before the air has stopped moving out of my mouth my wife says "NO". This alone is frustrating but what makes it even worse is that she will say "NO", thengo away and think about it and come back with a counter-argument OR say something like "That's not a bad idea lets do that", this can be anything from major life decisions to where we are going to put the new cat poop box we just got yesterday. Her instinct is simply to say "NO" without even considering it.

So a couple of weeks ago I heard her on the phone with her dad talking about a table he is going to give us. She said it would look perfect in the downstairs living room. So she gets off the phone and tells me about it, promptly I reply, "Wouldn't that be perfect downstairs in the living room", "NO" she replied without even thinking, went away and then came back a little while later and said "Not a bad idea". I got up, walked out of the room and went for a drive to calm down. Not saying a word.

When I got back she asked me what was wrong. I replied as a woman would "If you don't know what's wrong, I am not telling you". After about 10 mins I told her I had overheard the conversation with her dad and how putting it in the living room downstairs was her idea and yet when I suggested it her immediate response was "NO". The look on her face was priceless.

You can't just leave the story right there, what happened next? Did she at least attempt to stop saying "No" all the time?

[–]Mode1961 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, she still does it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You just summed up mine, too.

I honestly can't recall a single decision of even the slightest import that I was asked for input on in which my input was not immediately and completely disregarded.

I was basically there so that she didn't feel lonely. The second she found a circle of friends I was tossed aside in favor in favor of them.

I told my ex that she was an autocrat masquerading as a democrat so she could sleep at night, and that's still the easiest way to describe this phenomenon. You can't grow up in a culture that's been selling the general narrative of male incompetence in domestic affairs for decades and not ultimately raise girls into women who think men's opinions don't mean shit when it comes to domestic affairs.

The dumb dad and competent mom are standard fare in comedy. I love The Simpsons.

I'm old and there was a similar popular programme called The Honeymooners, with Jackie Gleason with the same story. Same with The Flintstones.

Could be part of our wiring to laugh at men. Certainly seems like you can't laugh at women.

One thing that really stands out for me is that at no point in the story, from that conversation that was the beginning of the end, to the therapist session, to any of her recounting her own poor behaviour, to the post-mortem does the thought seem to occur - maybe I should have tried to change?

Now I'm doubtful of the idea that people usually will fundamentally change at that point in their lives (though I have seen it happen), but surely at least the mere thought should have occured and been taken seriously enough to be part of the story. It certainly sounds like he tried to do it for her over the years, or at the very least entertained the thought.

I guess I'm not exactly surprised - I've seen this happen enough times through my life with friends and family (including my own parents) where the husband, after so long and so much trying to please, trying to change and never being good enough, has had enough and finally, meekly says no and that's that. I don't know if it's an inevitable extension of the same culture that requires the man to be the pursuer and the woman to decide whether he is worthy of her, but it certainly seems like in hetero relationships that it is just expected by everybody that "the relationship" or "the marriage" is ultimately her domain and he just kinda lives there at her pleasure.

White women: the most entitled overall demographic of human beings on the face of the planet.

Note also, her profile says she is a mom "and stepmom". Which means she is writing nostalgically in a public forum about her ex-husband while married to some other guy. Gross. She sounds manipulative.

[–]DevilishRogue -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'd assumed from that that her ex had remarried rather than her. It is a lot harder for older divorced women to get remarried than it is for divorced men to remarry after all.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That wouldn't make her a step mom. Her husband's new wife would become the step mom.

[–]genderbent6 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

Good for them. It sounds like they got out of a bad romantic relationship and ended up in a good platonic one, which is better for both of them and the kids.

[–]DevilishRogue 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The relationship appears to be now as it could have been without the divorce if only she hadn't been so selfish, demanding and unreasonable. This is not a win/win outcome, it is a realisation that she made a mistake but she still doesn't accept the gravity of the mistake, the harm it has done to her children and husband or how it could and should have been prevented by making her relationship a partnership in the first place rather than simply a means for her to get her own way all of the time.

You mean abusive.

Usually, I overruled him, talked him into submission.

It took me a long time to get enough distance to look back on this and change my perspective

= My hamster and I took a long time to come up with a plausible explanation to excuse me for breaking up a good marriage because of extreme selfishness.

[–]DevilishRogue 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And she still isn't remotely close to realising the full depth of what she has done to her children's prospects, happiness and upbringing. Probably too painful and shameful for her to ever admit to herself but at least it is a start.

[–]mikesteane 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, this is a huge blind spot for her. She cannot see that everything she has done, including writing the article, has been about making her feel good regardless of the cost to everyone else. The post hoc defence of "we are better parents separated, than when we were married" is not new, but it is absolute rubbish in all but a tiny minority of cases.

[–]Leinadro 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You know good on him for speaking up. Sure you can say he should have spoken up sooner but better late than never. All too often men suffer horrible marriages in silence thinking its their duty or something.

Glad he spoke up.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Still don't quite understand why she broke up with him because he didn't want to go volunteering with her or something. What was really the core issue that was so important to her?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

House husband gets divorced solely because woman doesn't like the stress of being the breadwinner.

Is there a man on earth who has divorced the mother of his children over such a thing? I can't imagine it.

[–]Aivias 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men need to take more time and energy to really think about what a woman is bringing to the table in a relationship.

If all you can think of is pussy, she needs to go. Sharpish.
