Loneliness is probably the number one taboo amongst men. While new studies have shown the devastating effects of loneliness on our health, one study showed 15% of American men say to have no close friends at all. I’ll consider myself lucky to have 2 close friends and a few related circles I get social invitations from, but I’ve experienced long periods of loneliness myself and I want to give some key points it took me to get out of it.
1
Being rich and lonely? Your life will suck. Athletic physique and lonely? Your life will suck. Being good looking and lonely? Your life will suck. As long as you’re lonely, your life will suck.
2
Make the observation. Recognize explicitly that you’re fucking lonely, you fucking hate it, and you really fucking wouldn’t mind having some close friends to hang out with on a daily or weekly basis. Now make a plan.
3
Whether you like it or not, close friends (and family) are the gateways to society. Yep you can vehemently discuss on the internet how strong and independent you are and how stupid clubs are anyway, but we all know you’re just masturbating your Friday and Saturday night away wondering what the fuck you’re doing with your life. For many good reasons, the cell of social events is not the individual but the tribe. This has been so since the dawn of time. We are a social species. Lonely wolves are not to be trusted.
4
Stop living in denial. Those high school friends on Instagram are no longer your friends. Those work related group chats on Whatsapp? An annoying distraction and even worse, a phony feeling of being connected to people. Best to just get rid of all of it (social media included), make room for actual meaningful relationships.
5
You can be lonely in a tribe too. They may bore you, have a different kind of humor, different desires... Whatever it is, if you feel out of place in a tribe, that mostly just means this tribe is not yours. Take your bags and move on.
6
Contemporary tribes have 2 essential rules: (1) they are almost always exclusively formed between people living in the same town/city, and (2) they require an activity for which multiple people’s presence and collaboration is a necessity. Can’t play football or do Jiu Jitsu on your own, can you? As a gym doesn’t adhere to the second rule, it is not a place where you’ll meet many new people.
7
It’s scary to start a new team sport when you’re an adult. Do it anyway. Go on the internet, look around in your area, join a free session. It will change your life. If you’re lucky to be young enough, join a scouting group, a student organization. Once you left uni, I haven’t found anything as bonding among men as team sports. Even if you suck, guys sharing the same interest as you are a blessing to be around, and they will gladly take you in and teach you the ways.
