Apparently, we used to be called wereman and wifman instead of man and woman, making mankind more obviously unisex. I think it’s only cause men would be regarded as a single unit more often (likely due to militias) that it became more popular for men to have the shorter term, though just about every male pronoun can be applied to a female as well. Feminists are too triggered by the term history to know that, though.
