Males are more restricted than females in terms of socially acceptable characteristics. But this isn't because of patriarchy or because people hate femininity

A recent article discussed the issue of girls being allowed to be tomboys. But boys having very strict ways in how they're supposed to act, how they're supposed to dress, what they're supposed to like and not like, and any slight deviation from this will lead to being attacked

A lot of it makes sense, because it's true girls can do anything considered extremely girly or extremely boyish without criticism. Whereas boys can't even have long hair, for example, without getting shit for it. But the problem is that, as usual, the conclusion the author comes to in the end is that this social issue--that negatively affects males--is really a women's issue and a product of misogyny

But I think it's short-sighted to assume that men and boys are restricted to a narrow range of socially acceptable behaviors due entirely to a disdain for women or a perception of femininity as inferior. For example, when males are demanded to register for selective service, but females have the option of either doing it or not doing it, this isn't because of a hatred of females

If this were the case, "girly girls" would be the least valued of all people. And the most inherently feminine characteristic--becoming a mother, giving birth or having the ability to give birth--would be the most despised characteristic. Mothers would be perceived as the weakest, most inferior, and least valued members of society if people hated women and femininity

This article makes it seem like traditional masculine traits are always seen as good and traditional feminine traits are always seen as bad. However, there are negative and positive stereotypes associated with both

Sometimes masculinity is seen as strong and determined. Other times it's seen as violent and predatory. Sometimes femininity is seen as weak and incapable. Other times its seen as loving and nurturing and beautiful. So it simply isn't the case that society sees femininity in general as bad or masculinity in general as good. Therefore that probably isn't the reason people don't like boys who aren't traditionally masculine

I think in a lot of ways, men are still perceived by society as utilities. Their duty is considered to be protecting women, making money for women, providing shelters and resources for women. Men who stray from that are shamed by society: men who don't get married are "immature", men who don't rush in to save a woman are "cowards", men who care a lot about their appearance are "narcissistic" or "douche bags" or "fags"

You wouldn't want a utility to have too many options in expressing itself, or choices in how to live. You would just want it to serve the function and role it's expected to. Thus, males who have varied interests / characteristics are despised more males who fit the expected roles, more than "tom boys", and also more than traditionally feminine females

TL;DR Males who don't conform to social expectations are stigmatized due to misandry, not misogyny. Don't buy it the next time someone says "it's because people hate femininity"
