If a girl starts chatting with you at a social event don’t be gross and flirt back.

Thoughtcrime.

[–]aokusman 20 points21 points22 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Remember it’s only a thought crime if it’s against a women.

[–]Consilio_et_Animis 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And the guy wasn't even on trial!

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is horrible. Private conversations now get people suspended from their job???

[–]pitstatic 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So did he fuck any sluts or not?

Feminists will surely be out in force to defend him #slutwalk

Gonna be honest, as someone who can get fired for saying 'fuck' or 'damn' I have no real sympathy.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

So, in a private conversation outside of work... you'll get fired for saying 'fuck' or 'damn'?

So, what you are basically saying is that "if your employer was aware of your reddit posts for any reason, you should be fired".

if your employer was aware of your reddit posts for any reason, you should be fired

This was how it was for my previous job. And the ninth circuit upheld the concept that we did not have full first amendment rights. Only a modified verison when the speech is in the best interest of the public. 'Don't be a cop if you want constitutional rights' was the general response from supervisors. Posting on social media of any kind, other than pictures with family, was strongly discouraged. Everything was subject to discipline or termination.

God damn. its like east germany.

[–]bam_shackle[S] 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Again, it was a private message, not a posting on social media.

[–]Apexbreed 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Same rules for private messages. Including emails. Watched, first hand, a supervisor get suspended for an email talking shit to the man who slept with his wife. No threats, just swear words. Employers can restrict all free speech if anyone else can hear, or read it.

[–]benjwgarner 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's crazy.

[–]BlindGardener 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

That's typical, not 'crazy'. Crazy is expecting something non-business-as-usual. Crazy is expecting not to get fired for anything and everything you do privately.

If my boss learns any details of my private life, I am probably fired. Likewise with your boss and you.

The only things I can't be fired for are my sexuality, my religion, my disability status, my veteran status, and my skin color. Everything else is fair game. Including my favorite football team. As for the religion question: It's frankly unclear if the areligious like myself get the same protections as members of minority and majority religions.

Not to split hairs, but you have full first amendment rights. However, the government is the only entity bound by that amendment; private employers can restrict speech or punish you for expressing things.

[–]Apexbreed 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I worked for the government. That's why it had to go to the ninth to be decided on. They ruled that government employees aren't guaranteed first amendment protections like a normal citizen:

https://www.rlslawyers.com/limited-first-amendment-rights-of-public-employees/

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That link makes it sound far less restrictive than you're making it out to be. Your example of the guy suspended for bitching out a guy who cheated with his wife seems like he would be protected.

The following five “tests” comprise the analysis: (1) whether the plaintiff spoke on a matter of public concern; (2) whether the plaintiff spoke as a private citizen or public employee;

[–]Apexbreed 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He wasn't protected because the guy knew he was a cop, therefore he was a representative of the department at the time of the contact. That excuse is used 100% of the time they wanted to hammer someone for off duty conduct. And it is supported overwhelmingly in disciplinary hearings. A lot of cops use anonymous social media, and/or fake job profiles to avoid some of this conflict. Many just cancel their social media accounts and don't play the game at all.

Not in your private life

At work sure, but not at home.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's happening here.

[–]BlindGardener 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, basically. There's a reason I am pseudonymous online.

[–]Adanu0 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gonna be honest; you and this guy are both in shitty situations, and your bosses are ridiculous, so I have enough sympathy for both of you.

[–]Meyright 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You've just said "fuck" or "damn". You should resign.

[–]teaseakay -5 points-4 points-3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Doesn't it make sense that he probably got fired for a private convo because he's a professional athlete (therefore a celebrity of sorts). He obviously objectifies women and spoke about it offensively but he got fired because he got caught. Other athletes probably talk like that as well so, no, I don't think their bosses give a shit about what they talk about or how they talk about it in private, just what goes public. Since this came out during a sexual assault trial, his team would get dragged in media if they didn't do anything about it.

[–]bam_shackle[S] 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The bosses don’t give a shit, I’m sure most of the fans don’t give a shit but the media will go after him.
