I really hate to have to post this kinda of shit.. But maybe people will SFU about all mass shootings being men

[–]Lethn 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well as with all these things, let's try not to jump to conclusions generally and wait for the details to come out.

[–]GoldenWulwa 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

The problem is the vast majority are males. Ignoring that doesn’t fix anything.

I don’t think all men are dangerous and murderers. But it’s disingenuous to act like this isn’t a problem that’s heavily weighted by one gender.

We have to find out why. Why are young men turning to extreme violence? Lack of empathy for their problems? A world in which they’re becoming powerless and desperate to feel it again? Society already telling them they’re dangerous and volatile?

I understand a lot of people use it as an excuse to prove men are worse or what the hell ever garbage they come up with. But more than likely it’s because they’re being treated worse in some capacity that turns them towards violence.

[–]Lethn 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This is a problem that nobody wants to talk about, especially feminists, it absolutely can't enter into their minds that all this horrible treatment of men is having consequences like mass shootings and lots of suicide especially with it being so bad in America.

As much as I agree with you, they don't even want to entertain the notion. As far as feminists are concerned if doesn't personally affect them and it's nothing to do with their lives, they they give a shit. However these are the very same people who have control over the narrative and try to shut up any discussion about the subject. If we want to get to the root cause then making sure to fight anybody who even attempts censorship is currently the best response.

The reason being should be obvious but if we can't even discuss the issue how can we fix the problem? I think this is one of the biggest reasons mass shootings aren't being stopped.

[–]GoldenWulwa 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I’m a feminist in the core sense of the word. But it’s true they’re putting reasons of male entitlement and being brats. Being entitled and being a brat doesn’t make someone shoot 50 people you fucking dweebs.

I don’t think they’re shutting down the narrative; they’re just attributing it to inaccurate reasons.

The problem is the media in general are just putting it as a “lone wolf” and “mental illness” situation. It’s a gun issue. It’s a mental health issue. It’s a Democrat/republican issue. Nah. Something is going on that isn’t as simple as blaming a single factor.

Maybe we’ll never know what it is. But identify a trend between shooters could help. Unfortunately so far, it’s been mostly men. I wonder what is happening to cause this.

[–]Lethn 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My personal theory is it's most likely the communities themselves that foster the environment. Regardless of ideology the main cause seems to be the fact that in each of these cases the community involved somehow decided to ostracise the individual as much as possible, but they don't stop there in the case of mass shooters and deliberately demonise them and attack them as much as possible until the inevitable happens and they lash out.

That's as far as the men are concerned I think in a lot of these cases where people didn't thing there was much wrong with them. The rest are either just flat out crazy or they've been completely indoctrinated.

If you don't believe me on the male shooter situation, the girl with the shaved head constantly speaking at anti-gun rallies over the Florida shooting admitted she ostracised the shooter and tried to justify it which indicates to me not all is as it seems in those communities.

This is kind of a thing for me, because even though I've not experienced anything near as dramatic what people on this sub have been through, I'm from Bradford, so I know what it's like living in a shithole community that you absolutely despise. Adding to that, I have firsthand experience of the kind of schools that can lead to creating the mentality for a mass shooter which is why I'm convinced it's going to be down to the community involved and they definitely won't be completely innocent in these cases.

What sucks most is the fact that all these other innocent people who might have otherwise at least try to get help for these shooters will have inevitably got dragged into their rampages.

I posted about bullying replying to you on another comment. I’m on a phone and can’t link.

[–]desderon 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The reality is men are more risk takers, for the good and for the bad.

All the people that put themselves as human shields for another person in the recent Vegas shooting were males. Some died. Do you think we should address it? Try to get more women to give their lives for others?

Both the shooting and the human shield behaviours come from men taking more risks. Unless you can change human biology you are not going to change this difference. When a person is so frustrated, depressed and mentally gone that he starts fantasizing about a murdering end, a man will actually go for it with higher probability than a woman. Same with a heroic act like being a human shield, a man will do it with a higher probability than a woman.

This should not be an excuse to avoid looking into what is happening with young males. But it is something to take into account. I personally think that trying to educate men as defective women and trying to make them become more feminized is confusing and frustrating them, because those attitudes work for women but lead to failures in men, something modern women, most teachers, have a hard time understanding. Feeling so lost, shamed to death by society if they chose another path and with no masculine role models in sight, they reach a point where they give up and decide to go out with a bang.

[–]GoldenWulwa 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

My only issue with masculinity is when it stops men from seeking help and makes them feel like they should be above feelings and emotions. This is what initially coined that little buzzword “toxic” masculinity.

I think to a degree it is a flaw in the concept we should address. While there are differences in men and women biologically, we still experience the same emotions. We just need to find better methods of therapy for men that don’t expect them to do what works for just women.

[–]desderon 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

We actually don't experience the same emotions. A lot of them are common, we are all humans after all, but there are certain emotions that are feminine and other masculine. For example, a man will never truly understand what a mother feels when pregnant, because we never fill it. Similarly a women will have a hard time understanding what is to experience a strong rush of testosterone.

That said, IMO the problem of men not seeking help is that modern society has cut all the environments where men get help and is trying to tell men to seek help like a woman, when it does not work for us.

For example, men don't do well talking, we do better when doing. That is why a lot of time it is more therapeutic for us to just join a friend in some repetitive task and talk silly things, than to go sit somewhere and talk our feelings. A women would find that stupid, but it helps us. But modern society has eliminated male spaces, where men can be men without worrying about offending a female, and has ridiculed bromances.

Moreover, men are told to share their weakness and failure with women, but women are repulsed by weakness in men. You might object to this but its true. We men know this instinctively hence why we need male spaces and "bros", not being told to open up to women until we have something figured out.

Another one, men need time to unwind. It has been proven that men benefit from resting in silent doing nothing after a long task, like a day of work. In the past women were told to give the husband a drink and let him unwind after work, but now asking the same is misogynistic and men are told they have to pay attention to their partners to be good husbands.

I could go on and on. My point is that men and women deal with emotional problems differently. We need a different process and telling us to behave more like women won't help. The problem is that feminism has closed a lot of the ways men had traditionally for dealing with issues, like invading and eliminating male spaces. And instead of recognizing it, you tell us the problem is we don't behave like women (toxic masculinity).

And I am not saying that we need to go back to the traditional gender roles exactly. There is value in tradition, but it can always be changed for improvement. But any change has to come from a realistic point of view. And in the last decades all the changes have been influenced by feminism and the view that men and women are basically equal, which is not realistic. Instead any positive change has to take into account the natural differences between men and women. Only this way we will find success.

[–]GoldenWulwa 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're right about hormonal differences. I should have made what I meant more clear. I was referring to loneliness, sadness, desolation, etc.

And admittedly I have a hard time accepting women are repulsed by weakness, but I only have my own experiences. My female friends don't act that way or make negative comments. I never had. I've held boyfriend as they've cried.I guess I believe women do, but I don't believe it's on a massive scale. That's my bias as a woman who doesn't feel that way about men and emotions. But I do believe your experiences and believe men have experienced it. I truly hate that.

As someone in psychology, I believe another issue is that women more often are the ones to become accessible therapists and counselors, especially in school. They may know in theory what works, but it's hard to feel what works when men and women are wired a bit differently.

[–]tenchineuro 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

The problem is the vast majority are males. Ignoring that doesn’t fix anything.

Is there someone trying to fix something?

Oh wait, the narrative is that men are broken and they need to be more like woman, sorry, carry on.

[–]GoldenWulwa 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

That’s not particularly fair. The fact stands that the majority are males. It doesn’t mean fixing men. It means addressing the factors that contributes to these men feeling the need to act out in this way.

Or maybe they’re unfixable and there are women with the same mindset but they’re content to just low key ruin people’s lives. Idk.

[–]tenchineuro 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

It doesn’t mean fixing men.

I've seen a lot in print saying exactly this, I did not make it up. The notion that men are broken is out there and has a lot of support, even from some few men.

It means addressing the factors that contributes to these men feeling the need to act out in this way.

That has never happened once, and I don't expect it will. No one cares about men, women don't care unless and until they also get burned by the situation.

[–]GoldenWulwa 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I mean I’m a woman and I care. These are human lives being lost. I feel for the victims, but I also have an iota of sympathy for the shooters.

What caused them that pain? Do they all just happen to be psychopaths? Was it no one cared?

It’s hard all around. Ultimately you need to be locked away once you’ve killed people. But it’s hard knowing there are others out there who are being ignored.

[–]TibsKirk 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Nobody asks these questions sympathetically when sexes are reversed. Nobody asks "What did she do to drive him to the point of murder? Was she abusive, and he finally snapped and lost it?" It's part of the reason for the sentencing gap. When women do bad things, people sympathize with the perpetrator. When men do bad things, people sympathize with the victim, generally speaking.

[–]GoldenWulwa 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is true. I think this is left over from when men did hold all of the power in society. A man acts this way because he wants to (the idea held, not my beliefs). A woman acted certain ways because she had to. If a woman killed a man, she got lucky she could even do it. If a man killed a woman, that was unfair due to power dynamics and because typically women are physically weaker.

"Why would such a sweet innocent creature kill? Obviously he was horrible!"

"Why did this man kill such a sweet innocent creature? Obviously he was horrible!"

This is possibly my own bias, but I think that, in the justice system, women are still seen as less capable and weak. They aren't expected to be in control of their emotions. Men are. And from a defense standpoint, who is going to believe a five foot four female was abusing a six foot male?

Women are seen as perpetual victims. Men are perpetual aggressors.

[–]TibsKirk 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Perhaps it might also be relevant that society tends to value and protect female life, while treating men as disposable. So it's (often seen as) a far more heinous act for a woman to be murdered, especially by a man. Double standards like this are everywhere.

Also, regarding your abuse claim, we now have many definitions of domestic violence that include more than physical abuse. Many feminists expanded those definitions to include verbal and emotional abuse. We're seeing less of a willingness to apply those standards to men abused by women. So it can be a little frustrating to read your sentence on "who is going to believe," although I don't think you meant it that way.

Anyway, thanks for having a conversation with us.

[–]tenchineuro 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I mean I’m a woman and I care.

Do you have a goldenwulwa? Sorry, just had to ask.

I feel for the victims, but I also have an iota of sympathy for the shooters.

In this particular case, the shooter is female.

What caused them that pain?

I don't know about the workplace shootings, but being worked over by the divorce industry leaves a lot of men without resources, hope and facing a lifetime in prison having committed no crime. I would imagine that sends some over the edge, or perhaps they feel justified in taking their tormentors with them. Recently I've seen several women who killed their children for no reason other than they feared that the dad might get custody.

[–]GoldenWulwa 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Haha. No. I had a WoW undead priest named Wulwa I dressed in all gold. So it is a play on the word, but just not my own.

As for this female shooter, I need to know more. Ultimately if you kill people, you need to be locked up. But I'm curious on the reason for this. As much as I absolutely hate this happened, it'll be interesting to see the factors behind this considering this is an uncommon occurrence.

There is an interesting dynamic in the differences of reasons for why men and women commit murder. I don't believe this will ever be stopped completely, but I'm hoping finding causes can help cut down on these cases.

[–]tenchineuro 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Haha. No. I had a WoW undead priest named Wulwa I dressed in all gold.

I think I played that for a bit, ever play Wizardry?

As for this female shooter, I need to know more.

Because she's female?

Ultimately if you kill people, you need to be locked up.

I don't think that will be necessary in this case.

But I'm curious on the reason for this.

For the most part, we never find out the reasons.

There is an interesting dynamic in the differences of reasons for why men and women commit murder. I don't believe this will ever be stopped completely, but I'm hoping finding causes can help cut down on these cases.

I think it would help a lot if the state would treated men as well as they treat women.

[–]GoldenWulwa 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I haven't played it before, but I'll look into it.

Because she's female?

Nope. Because the reason hasn't been released yet. I saw a few claims saying she was Muslim, and that's a whole different ball game of fucked up. Man or woman. Without seeing the factors for her doing this, I can't make any connections.

I think it would help a lot if the state would treated men as well as they treat women.

This I agree with. The prison system in general needs to be better. Women are more likely to have leniency for children, mental health, etc. I believe we need to give men the same opportunity. I know prosecutors and women are more likely to be allowed to receive mental health assistance than men. Just another "oh it's not her fault" situation.

[–]desderon 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Men are having a hard time though. I completely disagree with the typical feminist solutions, but saying that the modern western men is lost and confused is not wrong.

[–]tenchineuro 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well the government loves them. VAWA anyone? With a side of the Duluth model of course.

but saying that the modern western men is lost and confused is not wrong.

I'd say that they are abandoned and pretty much totally on their own, but the state is apparently willing to take them down for any reason or none.

but if I were to ask you why young men were taking up the ancient art of Persian cat juggling, you'd probably respond that they, you know, aren't

Username checks out.

[–]GoldenWulwa 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Those are good points. I apologize about my statement generalizing young men. I should have said “why are -these- young men turning to violence”. I didn’t intend to implicate all young men, just the ones who are at risk of these behaviors.

Ostracizing is a factor, but I’m hesitant to blame bullying by itself. I don’t have any data to compare, but women and men are bullied by peers. But we don’t see bullied women shooting people. I can believe boys are bullied more by both genders as it’s generally felt to be “too mean” for guys to bully girls. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen. But I can see how guys are more likely to bully other guys over girls because of the mindset they should “be able to take it”. Girls will bully any gender. I don’t see them discriminating.

I think it could be an interesting study to see the different ways boys and girls are bullied and the support networks available for both. It could be a big step in pinpointing ways to help prevent this.

[–]CreeperCooper 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, the reason so many men commit mass shootings is because they don't receive the help they actually need. It shows how the US dismisses the (mental and emotional) health of the male population.

Men aren't the cause of so many shootings, neither are guns really. It's their health and a society who doesn't care enough to do anything to help them.

[–]rainman206 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I mean, the VAST majority of mass shootings are men tho.

[–]tenchineuro 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I mean, the VAST majority of mass shootings are men tho.

And your point is?

[–]rainman206 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's a gendered issue. The facts support the notion that mass shootings are typically committed by men.

You can interpret that fact however you want.

[–]tenchineuro -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But why is this important?

[–]rainman206 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, someone wrote that people need to STFU about all mass shootings being men.

I pushed back against that because nearly all mass shootings are committed by men.

You could have just looked, the context is literally right there...

[–]EduBA 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

people will SFU about all mass shootings being men

It has been done, see NYT:

Sources told ABC7 that the shooter is a white, adult female. She was reportedly wearing a dark top and head scarf when she entered YouTube HQ on Tuesday afternoon.

Question:

Why isn't CNN calling for Gun control and posting a picture of this woman like they did for every male shooter?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Because her pictures are in a hijab, she was an alt-left radical muslim activist.

[–]Lethn -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Now that I'm waking up and had a look at the BBC article which details exactly who she was, she's pretty much the very sort of person you'd expect to do something like this.

http://archive.is/8CNMg

What surprises me isn't the fact that this has happened but that these sorts of lunatics haven't completely lost it and attacked people faster given how violent and fanatical they are generally.

[–]tenchineuro 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sources told ABC7 that the shooter is a white, adult female. She was reportedly wearing a dark top and head scarf when she entered YouTube HQ on Tuesday afternoon.

They were allowed to print this sort of thing?

Sources said that several people have been injured, but there were no reports of fatalities.

She probably brought the gun for show and tell and dropped it where it went off several times hitting several people, like that girl school shooter a while back.

[–]TibsKirk 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just a question here for anybody, based on things Warren Farrell recently said about the connections between male shooters and fatherlessness: Would it also be fair to investigate if this female shooter grew up without an active and present mother?

[–]ipwr85 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminists will still say she was somehow the victim.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Anyone notice how quick people were jumping to look for a male suspect and how different the media coverage is, and how news is saying "we still need to confirm she is the actual shooter."

Fucking bullshit.

Read most of the headlines, "female" isn't even mentioned in a lot of them.

Give it time, men will get blamed for this.

[–]TibsKirk 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
