Yet no one questions the store foods they are making us eat calling it nutritious, the added sugar, estrogen, fertiliser, growth hormones etc - we are poisoned more and more every day by household groceries, alcohol is only a small part to that.

I got clean and sober just over 18 years ago, so this topic is a good one. I used to hamster my alcohol consumption quite skillfully. I was secretive about it, thinking I was just oh so slick, but the only person I was fooling was myself.

Medically speaking, alcohol is a toxin, and anything over a couple of servings does have it's consequences. The beer gut comes from the ethanol. Ethanol is metabolized into glucose, which is the main blood sugar used for energy. Unused glucose gets stored as . .

Wait for it . . . .

Fat! The fatty deposits can set the stage for all kinds of problems; type II Diabetes, arteriosclerosis, heart disease. The fat also has the effect of lowering your metabolism and suppressing your immune system. There is also increased production of cortisol, which is a stress hormone. Cortisol triggers the craving for starchy carbohydrates, like mashed potatoes - that's the origin of the term "comfort food," btw. Simple carbs also are metabolized into glucose, which if unused, get stored as fat. Which then further suppresses the immune system, which triggers more cortisol production, and so it goes.

Aside from the physical effects, there is the psychological damage. Over time, as you develop a tolerance, it takes more and more and more to get less and less and less of the intended effect. As you progress further, you start royally screwing up your sleep cycle, because as your tolerance increases, what happens is that your blood sugar levels while spike when you're drinking, but an hour or two after the last drink, your blood sugar level crashes, which will snap you awake. Your REM part of the sleep cycle is what helps you recharge, so this is not a good development.

Now you need another one-not a whole one even, since only hardcore alkies need a whole other one to fall back asleep- but juuuuuuuuussssssssst a little taste to take the edge off.

You tell yourself you can handle it. You're just gonna have one. Or a few. The joke we used in AA was that one was too many, but a thousand wasn't enough. The essence of addiction is being able to look in the mirror and lie to that stranger staring back at you and say that you can handle it. Once you can bullshit yourself, it's seems like a cinch to fool everybody else, right?

When I finally called my parents and let them know why I had dropped out of sight I was nervous as hell. My dad would be disappointed that I hadn't come to them for help, but he wouldn't roast me about it too bad. My mom was the one I worried about. Kind of overbearing, theatrical and given to emotional displays. I dreaded having to talk to her. As it turned out, my dad didn't even say anything about being disappointed, just told me that whatever I needed help with, I only had to ask. My mom asked if I was okay, and then showed me how I really had been fooling myself. "We were worried and wondering what had happened! When we called the leasing office at your apartment and found out you were in rehab, the first thing I said to your father was: 'Thank God he finally got some help!'

I think people's lifestyles are too varied to make generalized statements. I switched over too smoking weed a long time ago because of all the calories in alcohol. However for my birthday 2 weeks ago I got absolutely shitfaced of both lol. Really I only drink if it is a holiday or a friends birthday ( so at most once a month) anyways the point us "puritans" are trying to make is that alcohol, especially beer, is very unhealthy. It has on average approximately 13 grams of carbohydrates. Pair that with late night pizza or tacos for that late night drunk munchies. Now of course this isn't a problem once a month. However if you spend every weekend doing this kind of stuff you will never reach your physique goals.

I can't drink more than one drink in a sitting any more. It's not that I cannot physically imbibe, due to a medical condition. But more so how my body processes the alcohol in the following 8 hours. I feel awful and depressed(alcohol is a depressant). It has next to zero positive attributes and doesn't improve my quality of life.

There are reasons why people drink alcohol since dawn of man: it's excellent for social relations, open the passions, open the hearts.

In the end happiness is with the others: friends, family, SO, not the number of pussy you got neither you being "the best".

As a man with high tolerance to alcohol, this same mentality has gotten me no where, but two visits to the hospital for alcohol intoxication. It feels good, but 2-3 hours of pleasure is not worth your life.

My earlier comment was offering my opinion, based on my experience. If I came off as preachy, if you were preparing to run away at the first sign of a pamphlet, that was not my intent at all.

I don't expect everyone to have the same opinion - General George S. Patton once observed that if everybody's thinking the same thing, then somebody isn't thinking - but I hope we can discuss this in a civilized manner, since this is a discussion forum.
