Why do female movie remakes make me sad?

It's because your childhood is being butchered by political ideologues, believe me, I know the feeling. They did the same to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles because some moronic kid hurt themselves with nunchucks so rather than call out the kid for being stupid and the parents for being incompetent they censored any scene with Michael Angelo and nunchucks in it and named it to "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles" instead.

They're doing the same thing to games, they will take any opportunity they can get to make art mediums their scapegoats and make us all miserable and angry by drastically censoring them, changing them or getting them cancelled when they can't do anything else.

Because nobody cares if James Bond is female - there are a gazillion movies with female characters in. Replacing an iconic man with a woman is being done for the signal it sends, as a message about the future. Same as why you may have felt sad on reading that a movie based on the true story of two hot air balloonists was being edited to replace one of the men with a woman - history was inconveniently male and "the future is female".

You feel sad because you know this is another brick in the wall that will hold you back and hold you down for the rest of your life. That's why.

I don't see why they do this when it's usually poison to a franchise. They should just make new female characters. It's no harder than making male ones.

For me, it is no different than the feeling I get about any remake these days. Obviously the politics of it make a difference, but I really don't see much of a difference in entertainment. There's cultural differences - because a female remake will play on a different set of tropes designed to pique the interests of its demographic. But that's like the other side of the coin to the overused male tropes present in so many male-dominated films.

At this point, another Bond movie cut from the same stone as all the others would be just as much of a cringe to watch as a female-remake. Actually, maybe more-so simply because there's so much less room for novelty in a film that has basically already been remade 24 times. At least this one would have a twist. Still doesn't make it better than a glorified reboot, though.

There's a certain amount of cringe that I associate with modern remakes based in the feeling that the production is just attempting to squeeze popularity points (and therefore revenue) from a specific demographic. They all adhere to tried-and-true tropes which just feel so cookie cutter and gross to me. Production companies are giants which don't want to throw their weight behind something even mildly risky. They've forgotten that the potential payoff for risk is owning the complete game-changing product.

What I'd rather see is something entirely different being made. Remakes in general are what give me the feeling you're talking about. Its a nostalgia cash-cow. Its corporate hitching a ride on identity politics and coopting the message in the process.

It's because the people behind them have a clear agenda to push. They believe if every group is represented then it'll reap major rewards that in the end will pay for themselves.

Except it's not. The all female Ghostbusters Reboot made little to no profit in the box office and lead to a loss. The all female Ocean's Eight came and went with nothing to show for it.

But instead of learning from these, they prefer insulting the customer base and catering more to those who put politics before entertainment. Forgetting that the latter will never invest in your product in the long-run.

I remember the days when, if you had a story to tell, you just told it with effort. You want your female character to be exulted by fans then make her interesting and have her work for her development instead of Mary Suing her way through her struggles and passing it off as development.

That's why it's sad. Nobody cares about telling a story.

This is an interesting take that Forbes had on it. Essentially, women aren't happy with their own thing, they need to take something from men in order for it to be of any value. You Don't Deserve a Female James Bond or a Lady Indiana Jones

Maybe it's knowing the intent of the suggestion. Knowing that they're doing it as a gesture to provoke and anger rather than improve a concept?

This doesn't make me sad - I celebrate when long-established, loved, and respected franchises are remade with "strong independent women" as the lead characters.

I celebrate because the movies then tank and fail and the feminists are spun up into even more of a rabid frenzy trying to blame everything (specifically "the patriarchy") except the real reason - normal audiences aren't interested in watching a well-loved movie being remade into a feminist statement with a political agenda. The audience's willing suspension of disbelief is stretched beyond the breaking point when a 100 pound woman lead is magically able to beat the crap out of a 240 pound man due to her strong independence and righteous feminism.

I also think the argument of "they're destroying my childhood" is specious. I'm not obligated to watch a remake and even if I choose to then it's not competing with the original movie I loved because I still have that movie.

So Hollywood can continue bending over backwards for feminism but it's only going to take a few more of these failed remakes before Hollywood decides what is really important to them - money.

Because redoing a movie with an all female cast is extremely lazy. Movies are works of art, they are basically just changing only piece of a painting, and copying the rest. Nevermind the fact that they're wasting the talent of any good female actresses they do have on a shoddy remake.

If you feel deep sadness and anger at this, just imagine how women feel when they have (relatively) incredibly few major roles and strong lead characters compared to men!!
