I don't necessarily disagree with anything she's saying in this talk, but the centering of this issue from an exclusively female perspective is not only counter-productive, to me its down right infuriating. She makes the claim that "girls' genital image is under siege." A claim I wouldn't totally disagree with, but again, her framing of this issue through the feminist lens implies that the same is not true for males; to that implication I say: are you fucking serious? Women are experiencing pressure to shave their pubic hair yes, but at least pubic hair A) grows back, and B) does not contain erogenous nerve endings. I'd like Peggy Orenstein to consider the reality that my penis was irreparably modified without any consideration for what I wanted, our culture justified the impugning of my sexuality on the basis that circumcision is "cleaner", or that its a parental choice, or a litany of other equally weak arguments. The numerous social stigmas that exist in the "western" zeitgeist against female sexuality are issues that need to be discussed, but invariably these stigmas are directed at women who're at least cognizant enough to incorporate them into their sexuality; in other words, a women can hear the rational arguments made by Peggy Orenstein and DECIDE to rebuke the stigmas that work against her. I, on the other hand, have to discover the rational arguments made by anti-circumcision activists and lament the fact that I will NEVER experience my sexuality as I was meant to. Why won't our culture address the topic of circumcision as though it were as equally legitimate of an issue as the social pressures women experience to shave their pubic hair? Any thoughts on this?
