I cannot possibly be the only one who realizes the tendency for conversations centering men as their topic to illustrate men/boys as problems requiring solutions, rather than people with problems that require solutions. Further, there always seems to be a prerequisite need for people hosting "male centered" conversations (which is a rarity to begin with) to justify the conversation by arguing that its in the best interest of society (namely women and girls) to address such issues. It should definitely go without saying that helping half the population is in everyone's best interest, so I struggle to regard the need to justify the effort as anything but problematic.
Even people regarded as "MRAs" have a tendency to do this, in Warren Farrell's 2015 Ted Talk entitled "The Boy Crisis: A Sobering look at the State of our Boys", Warren says: "Boys who hurt, hurt us". Which is absolutely true, but it is concerning that we only discuss these issues in the aftermath of a school shooting, rather than the average day in the US after ~104 men/boys have died by suicide. This attitude has resulted in a tendency for people to ask "how can boys/men be changed to fit the system better?", rather than "how can the system change to better accommodate the needs of men/boys?".
When I have posed this question in public either personally, or via the internet, the typical person would accuse me of "whining". An attitude that ironically sounds quite similar to the "boys don't cry" or "man up" attitude, which I thought was a regressive attitude, but hear quite often echoed from individuals who consider themselves progressive.
I present the following single example in an honest attempt to understand the world, the National Organization for Men Against Sexism (NOMAS) was founded in 1983 under another name: The National Organization for Changing Men. So this is my question: why did the organization change their name? And was there any change in the organization that accompanied the name change? It's difficult for me to interpret organizations such as this in a positive light, they don't really seem to give much of a shit about men, merely they seem concerned about solving a problem which they perceive as innately male.
I'm not going to apologize for my concerns here, and if its the case that particular ideologies have bolstered this total lack of human empathy for fundamentally human issues than I won't be apologetic in my rejection of those ideologies either. All thoughts welcome.
Edit: I posted this over on r/MensLib and it was removed within minutes, hopefully I'll have better luck here.
