I've seen a lot of people recently using the terms "paper abortion" and "financial abortion." I think this is a term we should avoid for the following reasons:

  1. Pro-lifers are going to instantly oppose it, and feminists will instantly object on the grounds that it isn't a fair comparison, which they should. By using such a politically charged term you alienate so many people right from the start.
  2. With Roe about to be overturned, abortion will be banned in many states. If you establish legal paternal surrender as the equivalent to a right that is about to be banned, then how will you be able to make the case that men should have legal paternal surrender on the basis of equality?
  3. It's not comparable to abortion. The equivalent to legal paternal surrender is legal maternal surrender. By the way, women have that under safe haven laws, so this avoids the problem of point 2. There is no male equivalent to abortion. There is no medical procedure men can undergo that terminates the pregnancy. SCOTUS has recognized that pregnancy and parenthood are two separate issues. Abortion addresses pregnancy, safe haven laws and legal paternal surrender address parenthood. Again, there is no male option to address pregnancy.

I would recommend "legal paternal surrender" as a replacement. Karen Straughan used this term, and she explained some additional reasons in her video "LPS Part 1- men have an equal responsibility?"
