My wife said she wants a divorce after 12 years because we are not compatible.

I'm trying to figure out how assets will be divided and how to protect myself. We have one child age 11 and agree on 50/50 custody and will likely not argue about child support. She also doesn't want alimony.

She doesn't want to address dividing assets until after she speaks with a attorney.

When we married, my wife had a BS degree and a professional license. I had a 2 year degree. She made about 1.5x what I did. She entered the marriage with a car, 2 kids and no savings. I had a car and house with little equity after 2008/9 and no debt. We joined finances right away and payed expenses out of a joint account. We lived in my house for a year before buying a house together.

Shortly after marriage she was fired for not complying with a corrective action. Very minor, but not filling out her time sheet on time repeatedly. She spent maybe 6 months unemployed and the rest of our marriage underemployed at 8 jobs. She has earned between 32k and 55k while someone with her degree starts at 80-100 today.

I have worked my way up and now earn 3-4x what my spouse does. I take care of the house, am the primary cook and split parenting responsibility.

Over the course of the last 8-10 years we have purchased a home and a separate acreage to build on someday. I have aggressively saved and painful down out debt. We have been debt free for a few years. During our marriage I have earned between 70-75 percent of the income. Our property is probaby worth a combined 400k and we have 350k in savings, investments and money market accounts. There is more in our individual retirement accounts that she said she isn't going after as she has her own. I've encouraged her to save for retirement to the point of being almost no income home at times.

We are in an equitable distribution state (SD). Am I going to loose half of everything? For the record, I don't want a divorce.

When my wife first divorced, her husband made just slightly more than her and I think they split 60him/40her.
