My wife informed me that she has retained an attorney and will be filing for divorce. We have 4 minor children together between the ages of 6 and 14. Our marriage has been extremely rocky now for many, many years. However, I really didn't see this coming. We've been in marriage counseling for a very long time. I've basically been a ghost to her for the past 6 years ... pretty much hasn't acknowledged that I'm even in the room. Anyway, through all of this, I've been holding out hope. Going to therapy. Trying to still be the best husband I could be given the circumstances (It's hard to be a husband to somebody that literally acts like you don't exist). Anyway, we were at counseling tonight (It used to be marriage counseling ... now, I guess, it's divorce counseling), and my wife is talking about "How are we going to tell the kids?". So, here's my deal. I don't want to put any undue burden on the kids ... that being said, my wife was saying things such as "I guess we'll just tell them that we don't love each other anymore and decided that it would be better to not live together anymore" (not exactly those words, but, basically, wanting to make it sound like a mutual decision). I'm really not okay with this. This was her choice. Her decision. Am I wrong for wanting her to take responsibility and own it? Is it wrong for me to tell her that I will not take any responsibility in the decision to divorce when it comes to telling the kids? (I'm not saying that I didn't do things that contributed to the deterioration of our marriage. I did. However, the decision to divorce is 100% hers. Am I just being petty?).
