No. If a girl asked me why after I asked her for her number, I'd assume that she didn't want to talk and that if she gave me her number, she would only be giving it to me reluctantly.

It's not like she knows you deleted her number, so it doesn't really matter whether you deleted it or not.

If you wanted to make the point that you don't really want to pressure her into something she doesn't want you could have said something like, "if you're not comfortable giving me your number than I totally understand" or "maybe you'd rather take my number than message me if you're interested in hanging out sometime"

Also it matters why she asked "why" she could just be curious, not because she was reluctant.

When a girl asks “why”, what she wants to know is what makes you interested in her apart from her looks obviously.

In other words, she wants to know whether your interest is mostly superficial or genuine because of some traits you liked about her based on the conversations you two have.

Based on your reply, she will either be more interested or turn off.

You need to keep your ego in check.

I don't think it was disrespectful or indicated no interest.. she could be asking why for a bunch of reasons.. maybe it wasn't clear if you wanted to be her friend, a romantic interest, or if you were just looking for a hookup.. maybe she simply prefers other forms instant messaging than texts..
