Massive bitch move. He doesn't have your back, and who knows how else he's capable of throwing you under the bus (there's a chance he's done it before without your knowledge too).

Let the chips fall where they may with whatever you have going on with your ex, but stand up for yourself and put this "decent buddy" of your's in his place.

Happened to me years ago. A few facts:

He's never getting into her panties, no matter what he tries (he is probably hoping for it at the moment though).
Due to above point, cut the MF out of your life.
When relationships split up, it's almost always inevitable to have a splitting of the shared friends group as well, if not more than that... see below.

My story: Was dating a girl for a year and a half until I broke it off. She was the craziest, most manipulative girl I've ever dated and that was 10 years ago now. Turns out that my best, BEST friend of 6 years with whom I shared everything about my life with had a crush on her all that time. So when I broke up with her, it seems he quickly weighed his options. One night I phoned him to come over, he picked up and sounded really dodgy. Like 2 mins in I realize he's at her place. WTF.

Long story short, a guy who does shit like this has the pussy so high on the pedestal that he also thinks nothing of it to throw away a 6 year friendship for the complete uncertainty of maybe getting a hot girl. He was like a brother to me and losing his friendship stung a lot more than losing my crazy ex.

Did he get anything from her in the end? NOPE! He willingly signed up to be her source of unlimited attention until she was over me, then dropped his ass just like that and he was left behind, this time without her or me.

Don't even call him out dude. He will shoot himself in the foot, they always do. Just be aware and you are mature enough to make a decision based on people's actions.

Call him out if you want for the satisfaction but it’s not necessary. He’s a bitch. Better to let him continue being a bitch, that’s punishment enough for some people but I feel there’s no right or wrong answer.

As for the girl there’s a 99% chance she’s more attracted to you now. Maintain your frame and play it off as if it’s no big deal.

You’ve done nothing wrong.

The biggest danger here is wether your behavior will change going forward with her.

If you apologize to her and start being nicer or more available because of all this, she will love it at first but lose respect for you in the long run.

Something similar happened to me.

Long story short, I cut him out. He knew i was pissed and why but still insisted on pushing me.

I finally texted him: "Fuck off you duplicitous piece of shit".

Now...was i right?

His first reaction was to complain about me...to other girls!!

So yah, he's a bitch. He still sees me and tries to be chummy an shake my hand.

I hand him the limpest noodle of a handshake if I'm in public and walk away.

This dude is not your friend. He's a shameless opportunist.

Be careful of the girl now. Now that she senses a "let you and him fight" situation she may start playing you.

Be prepared to lose both if you have to.

Call him out. Don't do it publicly and don't do it out of vengeance or in the spirit of teaching him a lesson- do it for you. IMO it's important to speak up when somebody pulls this shit. Remaining silent is a form of consent and also sets the precedent that people can walk over you without consequence.
