How do you continue conversations past small talk?

Don't small talk. Do real talk. For that, you need to be confident enough to be vulnerable and real, to not hide behind your masks and your protections.

Ask emotional questions like "how do you feel ?", "what is the thing you're the most grateful for in your life ?", "Which person in your family are you the closest ?", "What do you dream of doing one day ?", "how would you like to be remembered after you die ?".

Go with the flow of the conversation, don't prepare a list of questions you're going to ask. It has to come organically. Be prepared to show any part of you and dive with authenticity into the interaction. Be confident to talk about your shame, your fears, the thing you learnt on the way, the things that are uncomfortable. That's through vulnerabilities that humans connect.

If you talk with people about they like and value, and if you find common interests and values (which you have, you can ALWAYS find common passions), you will never be able to stop talking.

If you don't find common ground, ask the question "why". Like "why do you like cooking ?" - "Well because I like serving other people and make them feel happy" - "oh yeah I know that feel, I love volunteering !". And boom, you have a common passion which is "helping people".
