I haven't done an FR in a while, I thought I'd write up something strange that happened recently.
I met a beautiful woman at work a few months ago. I wasn't quite sure if she was interested, but I seemed to have done all the right things to get her attracted. All the IOIs were there, but I got mixed signals. I got her number, but I didn't really want to phone her, I called her once and the conversation was strained, with long silences while she said nothing. Very weird.
I decided to escalate and start texting her, she has an old Blackberry and texts a lot. And I got no response. One day at work, I even casually mentioned I sent her a text and she said she never got it. I figured she was just ignoring my texts and wanted to let me down easy. I sent a couple more texts but I didn't want to seem too desperate, so I gave up.
Now we're on hiatus at work for a month or so. I haven't seen her for a couple of weeks so I thought I'd try once more. No response.
Yesterday, I discovered my new iPhone was set up incorrectly by AT&T. It has no texting capability at all. I've been sending texts into a black hole. It looks like they were sent, but they just disappeared into the aether. She told me the truth, she really didn't get my texts.
Well crap. I've been sitting here, doing nothing, because I thought she was ignoring me. This is why I hate texting. There is no certainty your message was delivered, or if it's being ignored, the only way to know she got it, is if she replies. So now my phone is set up correctly, I can text. But it may be too late. I don't even know what to text her now.
It is conventional opinion in the community that you should not use texting for general conversation, but only for setting up times to meet in person and other logistics. I think I agree. Texting has serious limitations, the biggest one is that it is easy to miscommunicate.
