I'm potentially that friend. If you act like I mess things up, it'd make me even more stressed next time we enter a set: Obviously if I knew what to say, I'd say it.

A few things you could do:

When he does things wrong, explain what he did, why it was wrong, and what he should have done (tactfully ofc).
Before entering a set, or new social situation, prepare him to what you'll attempt and suggest something he should attempt.
Give him a hand. If he's stuck, or says something dumb, intervene and "save" him. It might be annoying at first, but he'll probably learn from it and soon learn to save himself (or avoid the errors altogether).

Riff off of him. Use him as a foil - when he says something off-putting, say something like "we don't let him out of the house a lot", and move on. As girls you're talking to, "do you have any nice girls for him" and play matchmaker for him (this is a GREAT way to disarm girls). Tell them he's Ringo in your band and ask her who her favorite Beatle is (and make fun of her choice, whatever it is).

But you can always talk to him about it if you think he'd be a good wingman.

I am posting this because I did not see this anywhere else, DO NOT teach him game, unless he personally asks for it, The Game is a very dark book, it's about trading your soul for glory, you were maybe wise enough to not do so, but I have friends who turned into complete douche bags thinking they were all PUA now, and even some that back stabbed me and aren't my friends anymore (even some of my best ones), because they got the idea that being a jack ass is how to get the girls. Do as the other users are saying, just cut him some slack on little corners that you can see that he doesn't, like an angel guardian, example: you grab a hot girl she wants to dance, and she's got lots of good looking friends, just tell her you can't leave your friend behind (it's not very polite), and maybe one of her friends should dance with him. Things like that make a difference.
